Based at the central London head office of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Campaigns & Communications Officer will work under the direction of the Senior Campaigns and Communications Officer to help promote the work and interests of the Union.
This role will have the following responsibilities:
- Plan, administer, organise, and deliver NUJ campaigns.
- Maximise positive media coverage of issues important to the union.
- Provide articles, news releases, quotes, and media briefings for NUJ officials and members.
- Respond to media queries in a timely manner, liaising with union officials as required.
- Ensure that the Union’s website reflects current union priorities, is regularly updated, attracts new recruits, and encourages members to engage in union activities.
- Create engaging content for social media platforms and develop the union’s online presence.
- Support communication efforts across the Union’s sectors to ensure a consistent approach.
- Reflect the Union’s geographic diversity in all communications.
- Coordinate and drive the Union’s work in parliament, including liaising with politicians and contributing to strategy papers.
- Assist in preparing responses to consultations, ensuring timely and researched submissions.
- Support engagement with members, lobby groups, and external partners to advance campaigns.
- Produce and develop editorial content such as newsletters, opinion pieces, and articles for officials.
- Enhance communication within the Union through various channels and ensure awareness of key campaigns.
- Develop high-quality campaign materials from concept to publication.
- Monitor and contribute to communication and campaign strategies, reporting to relevant bodies.
- Provide updates on departmental initiatives through reports to NUJ councils.
- Work effectively with colleagues to ensure departmental goals are met.
- Assist in other departmental work as directed by the General Secretary.
- Attend meetings as required, including NEC and sub-committees.
- Collaborate with industrial officials to achieve departmental objectives.
- Adhere to NUJ policies, especially regarding equality and ethics.
- Undertake additional duties as assigned by the General Secretary or their delegate.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
- Commitment to trade union values and understanding of issues facing journalists.
- Experience in developing campaigns from concept to delivery.
- Proven ability to produce multimedia content for social media platforms.
- Experience in updating websites and using email platforms like Mailchimp.
- Ability to create surveys and analyze data using tools like Survey Monkey.
- Strong writing and research skills, with experience in editorial content creation.
- Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.

- Ability to engage with diverse partner organizations including MPs and campaign groups.
- Proficiency in MS Office, fast and accurate typing skills.
