Job description

Boston Harbor City Cruises is seeking Deckhands for our operation aboard the Spirit of Boston and the Odyssey in Boston, MA.

Salary Range starting at $15/hour.

This person will be adaptable, dynamic, and embody City Experiences’ RESPECT Service System.

About the Opportunity:

As part of our amazing marine team, Deckhands will assist the Captain with docking and undocking, ensuring guest comfort and safety while underway, and maintaining the appearance and cleanliness of the vessel. Experience in this field is not required; we will provide training as long as you have an eagerness to learn and a strong work ethic. This entry-level position could lead to a career in the maritime industry. Shipmates must uphold the strictest safety standards for guests & crew and always maintain a professional and friendly manner. Light mechanical, electrical, carpentry, and painting skills are not required but are a plus!

Responsibilities:

  1. Provide exceptional hospitality to guests and coworkers.
  2. Follow safety procedures to ensure the protection of passengers and vessel.
  3. Participate in routine safety drills to prepare for major incidents.
  4. Handle lines to moor vessels to the pier.
  5. Stand watch in ships' bows, sterns, or bridge wings to look for obstructions in a ship's path or to locate navigational aids such as buoys and lighthouses.
  6. Assist Captain and supervisory personnel in maintaining vessel equipment and systems such as HVAC, engine, and technical equipment.
  7. Maintain the cleanliness and safety of all common areas.
  8. Sweep, mop, and wash down decks and exterior to remove dirt and debris, using brooms, mops, brushes, and hoses.
  9. Load or unload materials from vessels; gather and remove trash from the vessel.
  10. Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
  11. Be prepared to begin work at scheduled time.
  12. Maintain uniform and personal grooming in compliance with appearance standards.
  13. Additional job duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High School Diploma (or GED or High School Equivalence Certificate) preferred.
  2. Light mechanical, electrical, carpentry, and painting skills are not required but are a plus!
  3. Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  4. Must be able to effectively understand and convey written and verbal information to guests and coworkers.
  5. Must possess a service orientation – actively looking for ways to help others.
  6. Energetic and enthusiastic personality essential.
  7. Will work for extended periods of time without sitting.
  8. Must be able to lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
  9. Must be able to throw mooring lines from ship to pier.
  10. Must have normal color vision to accurately interpret navigational lights and color-sensitive systems and safety displays.
  11. May be required to apply for a Transportation Workers ID Card.
  12. Will be required to be available for work on all major holidays.
