Are you the individual to help shape and develop the in-house legal team in LUHFT.

The Legal Service at LUHFT is a dynamic, growing and supportive team with the role providing an exciting opportunityfor an exceptional individual to lead our Legal Services Department. As part of this, you will also act as the lead for the emerging Liverpool NHS Legal Services Collaborative with responsibility for the provision of legal services across a further two trusts commencing early in 2024.

Main duties of the job

The team's work is impactful, and varied and includes:
  • Providing expert advice to Board Members, Executive Directors, Senior Leaders and other staff within LUHFT and LegalServices Collaborative member trusts in relation to relevant legal issues. This involves highly complex, highly sensitive, highlyconfidential, and sometimes contentious information.
  • Leading the further developing the innovative NHS Legal Services Collaborative for Liverpool this is supported by NHSEngland and the Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care System.
  • Acting as the relationship manager for all external legal advice (clinical, commercial, workforce) and liaison with externalsolicitors.
  • Providing strategic direction, support and advice across in relation to legal services to all areas.
  • Ensuring that risk management processes are followed for any risks identified through the legal and coronial process

All lawyers within the Legal Service Department provide advice, often to senior decision makers, personally and at pace. The team handles a fantastic range of interesting and challenging work in an environment where there is a good balance of autonomy and support. The focus of the team is on building relationships, understanding the organisations we serve and quality of output rather than time recorded or hours billed, which means there are plenty of opportunities to develop professionally.

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was created on 1 October 2019 following the merger of two adult acute Trusts, Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust.

The merger provides an opportunity to reconfigure services in a way that provides the best healthcare services to the city and improves the quality of care and health outcomes that patients experience.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • oQualified lawyer in England and Wales or other common law jurisdiction
  • oMaster qualification or equivalent
  • oEvidence of continued professional development
  • oSignificant PQE in Healthcare Law
  • oExperience of working in a senior legal services role within an NHS organisation.or healthcare law sector
  • oSignificant experience in representing and management of litigation and inquest arrangements
  • oExperience in training medical, nursing and other staff.
  • oSignificant experience of building, maintaining and utilising successful partnerships across a range of stakeholders to influence and drive change.
  • oExercise judgement involving highly complex facts or situations, which require the analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options.
  • oExperience of policy development and implementation
  • oEvidence of the ability to manage conflict and sensitive situations, acting with tact and diplomacy.
  • oExcellent interpersonal skills with the ability to facilitate effective relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
  • oAbility to write and implement policies


Desirable

  • oSound knowledge of risk management and other elements of governance with particular reference to complaints management, incident management and regulatory compliance
  • oDetailed understanding of current healthcare policy and appreciate the implications of this on the Trust and Legal Service Collaborative members.
  • oExperience of effective partnership working with a range of agencies and stakeholders.
