Salary: Up to £110k depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
Contract type: Permanent role
Location: Office Base is Newcastle, Salford or London. This is a hybrid role and the successful candidate will balance office working with home working based on the needs of the role and their teams.

Two stage interview process

• 1st stage - Virtual interview approx. one hour of technical and values-based questions. Interviews expected to begin the week commencing 9th June.
• 2nd stage - Presentation and questions

Main Responsibilities

As a Software Engineering Manager, you will have responsibility for up to 50 staff, leading a team of Software Engineering teams, and directly line managing the Software Engineering Team Leaders and Principal Software Engineers. You will collaboratively guide change and improvement across your area whilst working closely with peers in Engineering and Architecture, and with other disciplines such as Product Management.

As we have multiple roles, we are looking for candidates with experience in building, managing and being accountable for one of the following technical areas:

• Marketing technologies and customer data platforms like Salesforce, mParticle or notifications platforms like Airship. ML engineering eco-systems, working with managed tools such as SageMaker.
• Trusted and scalable platform and services that power seamless and secure experiences, including systems and services allowing users to manage their privacy, devices and communications.
• Content publishing tools, workflows, systems and services to enable BBC journalists and content creators to author and describe their work, while also powering the BBC's audience experiences. These tools leverage technologies like Java and Node.js, incorporate generative AI, and are built on cloud infrastructure.

• Experience leading multiple software engineering teams, with experience delivering platform capabilities
• A track record of recruiting and building strong teams and growing engineers and engineering leaders
• Experience creating and nurturing a diverse, welcoming and inclusive team,
• Experience fostering a positive, energising environment where everyone feels like they belong, can be their authentic selves, and can bring the best version of themselves to work, every day

Delivery

• Managing multiple stakeholders in a complex matrix environment including Product, UX/D, Architecture and Delivery
• Working collaboratively with your reports, peers and stakeholders to deliver work to ambitious time scales
• Experience delivering successful technical solutions to meet specific business requirements in agreed timescales

Technical

• Operational experience managing DevOps teams and ensuring high availability of products and services at scale
• Technical design and service architecture experience, particularly with large scale, high volume customer facing applications
• Driving continuous improvement in the software engineering craft, improving tooling, practices and processes
