Wood is currently looking for an Instrument Engineer with a Fire & Gas background to lead a small project team for a major client within our Systems Integration team as part of Woods Consulting business unit to support across our UK projects.


This is a hybrid role that can be based at any of the following UK offices: Aberdeen, Staines, Reading, Glasgow or Northampton with the expectation of travel as required.


Please note applicants must be able to pass HMG Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) check.


The Role

As the project lead, Instrument Engineer you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of industrial facilities by designing, implementing, and maintaining fire and gas detection systems to ensure safety in industrial environments, such as Oil & Gas, Chemical Plants, and manufacturing facilities.


The project lead will work closely with the process safety and automation teams to integrate the fire and gas systems. Alongside the day-to-day support to the team, the project lead will ensure accurate progress tracking, reporting, and will attend regular meetings with both internal and external stakeholders.


This opportunity is ideal for an individual who has proven experience in leading small teams and has previously been involved in brownfield upgrades and/or replacements specifically within automation and control projects.

Responsibilities

The key objectives of this role are:

  • Develop fire and gas detection system designs tailored to gas plant specifications and industry standards
  • Prepare design-related documents (e.g., Detailed Design Specification, Cause and Effects diagram, Functional diagram, F&G layout, Fire and Gas Philosophy, Instrument specifications for package equipment, BOM, system architecture, and operation narrative)
  • Select suitable instruments for hazardous applications
  • Conduct inter-discipline reviews of deliverables from other departments
  • Produce material requisitions and contribute to technical bid evaluations
  • Review vendor drawings and consolidate comments from other disciplines
  • Implement control systems for fire and gas detection, ensuring seamless integration with existing plant safety systems
  • Ensure all fire and gas detection systems comply with relevant UK safety standards and regulations for gas plants
  • Conduct safety audits and risk assessments specific to gas plant environments to identify hazards and improve system reliability
  • Lead projects related to the installation and upgrade of fire and gas detection systems in gas plants
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including safety, engineering, and operations, to ensure project success in gas plant settings
  • Maintain detailed records of system designs, installations, maintenance activities, and compliance checks for gas plant projects
  • Provide regular reports on system performance, incidents, and improvements to management
  • Adhere to discipline-specific procedures and provide feedback for continuous improvement
  • Support the development and delivery of technical safety standards and assurance
  • Participate in audits and incident investigations as required
  • Maintain own competence and pursue continuous professional development
  • Provide discipline support to the business
  • Ensure awareness of relevant regulations, legislation changes, initiatives, and industry technology developments, and promote these to direct reports
