Preston City Council’s Cultural Service is seeking a hardworking, passionate, and dedicated Assistant Curator to join the Programmes and Collections team at the Harris.
Job Description
As Assistant Curator, you will work closely with colleagues across the Harris teams to support community-focused engagement activities and the installation of objects within redesigned public spaces, creating areas for activities and enhancing access to collections.
Working with colleagues, volunteers, community participants, partners, and supporters, you will prioritize co-production and collaborative practices, guided by our Community Empowerment Guidelines.
Job Requirements
- Provide curatorial support during the Harris Your Place capital project.
- Collaborate effectively with the programme and collections teams, demonstrating initiative and independence.
- Support the delivery of the Harris Your Place Activity Plan.
- Assist with new approaches to co-production with communities and stakeholders.
- Assist with condition checking, packing, movement, and storage of collections in off-site and on-site stores.
- Support content development for the design and interpretation of the Harris.
- Assist with developing, delivering, and managing community-based displays.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of displays at The Harris.
- Support marketing colleagues with collections-related content for the website and social media.
- Assist with collections care and management.
- Facilitate collections conservation prior to display.
- Collaborate with the curatorial team.
Job Responsibilities
- Work with the curatorial team to safely retrieve collections from external stores and prepare them for display, including documentation, condition-checking, packing, unpacking, and re-storage.
- Support the delivery of display programmes within The Harris and partner organisations.
- Assist with digitising collections to create content for interactives and online access.
- Conduct collections and image research to support content development, including digital content creation.
- Secure copyright clearances and permissions for use.
- Write labels and provide collections-related information to project team members.
- Facilitate collections conservation work prior to display.
- Work with the curatorial team and other project members to prepare collections.
