Summer garden workers are required to work 40 hours per week. Most of these are daytime hours, Monday through Friday with occasional weekend work.

Position Description

Position Summary

This is one of three full-time positions responsible for running all aspects of the garden during the summer. This includes cultivating a variety of crops on both garden plots (a total of 1.25 acres), harvesting fruits and vegetables, running a Community Supported Agriculture program, chicken care, beekeeping, marketing produce, selling produce, and keeping careful records.

Major Preferred

Students of all majors are encouraged to apply, but students in biology, business, marketing, entrepreneurship, environmental science, and engineering are desired.

Experience Required

No experience is required.

Experience Preferred

Students who have any experience in gardening, landscaping, horticulture, farming, or business are preferred.

Skills, Characteristics Required For Position

Above all, applicants must be hard-working and dedicated to the mission of the garden. The success of the garden in the summer and fall is a direct reflection of the work put into it by summer managers. Applicants must be:

  • able to work 8 hours/day outside in all weather conditions.
  • be independent and self-motivated, able to prioritize, plan, and set goals.
  • enjoy physical labor, as this job requires a great deal of lifting and working the ground with garden and farm tools.
  • possess great customer service skills in order to provide our customers with excellent service.
  • be able to work as part of a team, showing patience and respect to other team members.
  • possess understanding that they are caring for living things. As such, minimal after-hours or weekend work may be required for watering thirsty plants or feeding chickens.

Dress Code Requirements

Sturdy shoes and work clothes that are appropriate for gardening work.

Special Working Conditions

Garden managers work outside. This means they are exposed to sun, rain, and insects (including mosquitos, ticks, and bees)

Must have valid driver’s license and be approved to drive Messiah vehicles. Managers will need to be able to drive Messiah gators and trucks.

Physical labor, including bending, lifting, kneeling, and standing for prolonged periods.

Background Check Required No Primary Duties

  • Creating a schedule of when to plant and harvest summer crops and when to plant crops for the fall.
  • Harvesting all crops daily.
  • Delivering produce to Dining Service on occasion
  • Delivering produce to our CSA members
  • Running weekly farm stands on campus. This includes setting up and tearing down, recording sales, marketing farm stands, serving customers, etc.
  • Maintenance including regular weeding, pest and disease management, trellising, pruning, raised bed construction etc.
  • Regular watering. This may require managers to share responsibility to water crops on especially hot weekends.
  • Chicken keeping. This includes daily feeding and watering, egg collection, and coop repairs.
  • Maintain consistent and reliable attendance.

Secondary Duties

  • Track income and expenses.
  • Keep Sustainability Office tidy.
  • Organize fall farm stands.
  • Recruit volunteers for following academic year (through organizing for Student Involvement Fair).
  • Other duties as assigned.
