Job Description

Your new role

Southend City Council is seeking to appoint a full-time, permanent Youth Justice Service Officer. The role involves providing a first-class professional service within the Youth Justice Service (YJS) by working with children, young people, and their families to prevent offending and re-offending.

The officer will manage a caseload of complex young people who have committed serious offenses and entered the criminal justice system. The role requires understanding and managing public protection and safeguarding young people. Responsibilities include working in courts, representing young people's cases, providing high-quality information to magistrates and judges through verbal communication and pre-sentence reports, and completing assessments to inform court decisions and intervention plans.

You will supervise and enforce community and custodial sentences and deliver support and mentoring services to young people. The cases handled may involve significant risks, including harmful sexual behavior, gangs, and County Lines (serious youth violence).

You will ensure high-quality assessments, intervention planning, reviews, and risk management. Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage young people and their families on court orders are essential. Hybrid working arrangements are available, with a minimum on-site presence of three days per week at the Civic Centre.

What you'll need to succeed
  • UK Youth Justice experience is essential.
  • A relevant professional qualification at degree level (or equivalent) in Youth Justice, Careers, Education & Guidance, Youth & Community, Probation Service, or Social Work.
  • Extensive experience in assessments, report writing, and court work.
  • Ability to assess and manage risks of harm, protecting the public, and ensuring the safety and well-being of young people both in the community and custody.
  • Good knowledge of youth justice interventions, child protection, and prevention, with evidence of ongoing professional development.
What you'll get in return

Benefits include 25 days of annual leave, flexible working options, and excellent training and development opportunities. The council is committed to supporting staff in this challenging and rewarding role through appropriate training and resources.
