Job Description:

We're excited to advertise our retail trainee manager programme to future leaders in London. This programme offers an opportunity to develop into your first management role with Sainsbury's or Argos.

A manager's role involves leadership, decision-making, and overseeing store operations. Customers and colleagues are central to this role, which emphasizes safety, legality, and security. To support your development as a leader, we've designed a three-phase learning journey to equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills.

If successful, you will be placed in a store, with consideration of your residence and travel time. Flexibility on location will be discussed during the interview. The final placement could be managing a convenience store, Argos, or a supermarket. We value raw potential, regardless of previous leadership experience, and are committed to supporting your development. We offer a competitive salary, benefits, and flexibility in hours (part-time and full-time options) and locations, providing a platform to grow your career in retail.

What you'll do

The programme consists of three phases:

  1. Phase 1: A 6-week learning journey with workshops, tasks, and e-learning, culminating in a management role in a Sainsbury's supermarket, convenience store, or Argos store.
  2. Phase 2: 12 weeks of role-specific training and practical experience, supported by job experts and a line manager mentor. Successful completion leads to a permanent management position.
  3. Phase 3: Full management responsibilities while re-joining the cohort for final behavioural skills training, focusing on performance management, feedback, and team dynamics.

Who you are

Motivated by a passion for food, customer service, and our products. No leadership experience is necessary; enthusiasm to learn and skills in communication, customer service, and teamwork are valued. We're excited to start your leadership journey with us.

The Process

Application involves answering questions to assess suitability. Successful candidates will be invited for interviews from late November to early December, with the cohort starting in early January.

What we’ll give you

Starting salary from £13.15/hour, increasing after 6 weeks and upon role sign-off. Post-sign-off salaries can reach up to £33,650 depending on the role.

Additional benefits include:

  • 10% shopping discount at Sainsbury’s, Argos, Tu, Habitat after four weeks (increasing to 15% on Fridays and Saturdays at Sainsbury’s, and every payday at Argos)
  • Free food and drinks in stores
  • Generous holiday, maternity, and paternity leave
  • Pension scheme with 4-7% employer contributions
  • Sainsbury’s share scheme
  • Wellbeing support and counselling
  • Colleague networks
  • Cycle to Work scheme
  • Special offers on memberships, holidays, retail vouchers, and more
  • Nightshift premium up to £4,500 annually (discussed during application)
