We’re working on behalf of a premium, online grocery retailer looking for a results-focused Buying Manager to lead the grocery category.

This role will oversee purchasing, strategic planning, and team management, ensuring outstanding performance in sales, margins, product quality, and range. This role leads a portfolio which accounts for over half of the business's turnover, requiring someone who can lead the team that manages the day-to-day buying activity whilst maintaining relationships with key strategic suppliers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead, motivate, and develop the grocery buying team, emphasizing continuous improvement through clear objectives and regular feedback.
  • Identify and address training needs to enhance negotiation, supplier management, and commercial analysis skills.
  • Strategically manage and optimize product ranges through targeted launches, innovation, and effective delists.
  • Collaborate closely with trading and marketing teams to develop and execute promotional plans that deliver strong commercial outcomes.
  • Manage forecasting, budgeting, and financial planning, ensuring alignment with overall business objectives.
  • Build and maintain strong supplier relationships, effectively managing risk and identifying growth opportunities.
  • Regularly monitor performance metrics, proactively addressing commercial risks and opportunities.
  • Utilize market insights and competitor analysis to shape category strategies and enhance market competitiveness.
  • Work collaboratively with Supply Chain to ensure maximum availability and minimal wastage.
  • Coordinate cross-functionally with marketing, technical, operations, and finance teams to drive cohesive and aligned strategies.

About You:

  • Proven experience managing, mentoring, and motivating high-performing retail teams.
  • Strong buying experience, ideally from multiple categories within grocery.
  • Demonstrable success in achieving key commercial metrics.
  • Numerate, with strong commercial insight.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communicator capable of building cross-team support.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Passionate about locally sourced food and/or sustainability
