A little more about your role

The Planning discipline has 800+ consultants and engineers across the UK, with Development comprising 300 of these in 15 offices nationwide. Your role will support growth in Southampton and the Southwest to Southeast regions, focusing on client engagement, technical leadership, and business development. This senior position emphasizes strategic and client-facing activities over daily operational management and aims to diversify our team in staffing and revenue.

  • Provide strategic direction and visible leadership
  • Demonstrate behaviors aligned with WSP core values
  • Coordinate with colleagues to share market intelligence, best practices, and innovation
  • Engage with Technical Leadership Group to promote technical innovation and advancements
  • Collaborate with Regional Director and Office Leads on team structure and skills
  • Drive business development through local networks and relationships
  • Secure major projects and expand our order book
  • Lead and support bid submissions, adding value both commercially and technically
  • Act as Project Manager or Director for major and strategic projects
  • Ensure compliance with SHEQ policies and promote health and safety
  • Mentor colleagues in succession planning and talent development
Your Team

The Development Team is a high-performing discipline within the Planning and Development business unit, comprising over 800 professionals involved in project delivery from land acquisition to construction. We aim to be the industry’s best development team, driven by technical excellence, people, clients, and operational excellence. Our services include:

  • Civil engineering, highways design, and earthworks strategies
  • Utilities, energy planning, and coordination
  • Drainage, flood risk, and SuDS
  • Site appraisal, due diligence, and strategic planning
What we look for
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and management skills
  • Commercial acumen with a proven track record in business development
  • Excellent stakeholder and team management skills
  • Ability to motivate, lead change, and foster an innovative culture
  • Forward-thinking with long-term planning capabilities
  • Broad project experience, especially within civil design for developments
  • Effective communication, coaching, and presentation skills
  • Ability to build and sustain professional relationships
  • Logical reasoning and systematic problem-solving skills
  • Degree in civil engineering; Chartered status or working towards it
  • Extensive experience in civil design for developments
