Qualifications

Job Description:

The North West Trunk Road Unit spans some 1,422km of trunk road through some of the most scenic parts of the country. It also includes 1,501 bridges and structures, including the Kessock Bridge which carries the A9 north of Inverness and the A87 Skye Crossing.

The North West Unit covers a huge area of Scotland, from Thurso and Wick in the very north of the Highlands down to Campbeltown in Argyll and Bute, from Uig on Skye to Perth and Stirling in the central belt.

The Planning & Development Control Engineer/Technician will be part of the Planning and Development Control Team dealing with third party works design checks and planning applications along with checks for statutory undertakers works.

Role includes:

  • Assist the Third-Party Development Manager in liaising with developers and Transport Scotland in relation to all planning applications.
  • Assist Transport Scotland with the preparation and administration of Minutes or Letters of Agreement and Road Bonds.
  • Carry out Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) design checks on all third-party works on or under the trunk road.
  • Carry out New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA) checks for statutory and non-statutory undertakers.
  • Assist the Journey Time Reliability Coordinator (JTRC) with any other queries relevant to third-party works on or under the trunk road.
  • Other duties applicable to the role as required by the Network Management Contract or as directed from time to time by the Third-Party Development Manager.
  • Must be able to work to strict deadlines.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Qualified to HND or equivalent with experience in relevant discipline.
  • Good understanding of Roads (Scotland) Act 1984 and New Roads and Street Works Act 1991.
  • Working knowledge of current DMRB and other design standards.
  • Good computer skills including the use of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to solve problems.
  • Assist with answering of correspondence.
  • A full approved UK driving licence.
