Job description

A primary school in Newham is seeking a SEN Teaching Assistant for January 2025, to play a vital role in supporting students with a variety of special educational needs, helping them to excel in a nurturing and inclusive learning environment.

Role Overview:

In this role, you will provide targeted support to children with diverse SEN, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Down Syndrome, and other needs. Your work will be instrumental in ensuring that these students receive the tailored assistance they need to succeed academically and socially.

Key Responsibilities:

Individualised Support: Provide one-on-one or small group assistance to students, adapting your support to meet their unique learning needs and helping them engage effectively with their educational activities.

Implementing Support Plans: Work closely with the class teacher and the SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) to execute and refine Individual Education Health Care Plan and other support strategies, including setting goals, monitoring progress, and making necessary adjustments.

Classroom Assistance: Support the class teacher by assisting with lesson planning and classroom management, ensuring that resources and teaching methods are adapted to meet the needs of SEN students.

Behaviour Management: Use positive behaviour management techniques to support students in developing self-regulation skills and address any behavioural challenges that may arise.

Progress Tracking: Maintain detailed records of students' progress, achievements, and areas for improvement, providing regular updates to teachers, parents, and other relevant stakeholders.

Collaborative Approach: Engage in regular communication with teachers, parents, and other professionals to ensure a coordinated approach to each student's education and well-being.

Promoting Independence: Encourage students to develop self-help skills and confidence by providing guidance and support tailored to their needs.

Inclusive Environment: Contribute to creating an inclusive and supportive classroom atmosphere where every student feels valued and motivated to reach their full potential.

Qualifications and Skills:

Experience with SEN: Previous experience working with children who have special educational needs is essential.

Knowledge of SEN Strategies: Familiarity with SEN support strategies, such as PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), Makaton, or Colourful Semantics, is advantageous.

Empathy and Patience: Strong empathy, patience, and a commitment to supporting children with SEN are crucial for this role.

Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration with teachers, parents, and other professionals.

Commitment to Inclusion: A dedicated approach to fostering an inclusive educational environment and supporting each student's growth and development.
