Job description

Job Title: Consultant Engineer - Electrical Engineering

Location: Barrow-in-Furness, Filton - We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements. Please speak to your recruiter about the options for this particular role.

What you'll be doing:
  1. Acting as the electrical SME providing technical leadership and guidance to a range of cross discipline internal and external stakeholders including equipment suppliers.
  2. Managing the electrical interface with the electrical power system ensuring that a 'best for programme' approach is adopted.
  3. Technical ownership of the end-to-end delivery of key technology readiness projects, ensuring appropriate maturity is achieved prior to platform integration.
  4. Supporting technical delivery of facility requirements needed for technology readiness projects, including facilities for verification and validation activities.
  5. Undertaking technical risk analysis and developing risk mitigation plans for equipment delivery into the SSNA platform.
  6. Supporting development and resilience planning for the SSNA Steam IDTs engineering team, ensuring succession planning is in place to support SQEP capability.
  7. Independent governance, authoring, and approval of technical artefacts.
Your skills and experiences:

Essential:

  • Relevant 1st degree in Electrical Engineering (BSc, BEng, MEng).
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working toward Chartership.
  • Knowledge of integrating power electronic conversion equipment into power system designs (inverters, rectifiers, active front end, filter interactions).
  • Knowledge and experience of key power system interface requirements (stability, quality, protection coordination).
  • Experience in developing and delivering power system/equipment verification and validation plans, including technology readiness level strategies.
  • Understanding of the complete engineering lifecycle in a complex environment.

Desirable:

  • Additional qualifications such as MSc(Eng), MPhil(Eng), PhD, or EngD in Electrical Engineering.
  • Knowledge of permanent magnet rotating machines.
  • Knowledge of power system analysis of AC and DC systems, including modelling of generators, AVRs, governors, and speed controllers.
  • Understanding of power system control and instrumentation interface requirements.
  • Submarine operator experience.

The SSNA Steam Integrated Delivery Team (SIDT):

You will serve as the Electrical SME within SSNA's SIDT, responsible for delivering key equipment into the submarine platform, involving novel equipment and parallel technology maturity plans. This role offers significant development opportunities from requirement generation to verification and validation planning, including facilities development to enable timely equipment delivery and technology realization. Relocation support packages are available for eligible candidates.
