The Role
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our fast-paced interdisciplinary research team based in the School of Engineering. The project will involve working with Professors Russell Davenport, Sam Wilson, and Tom Curtis, along with a Research Technician. This project is a collaboration led by Royal HaskoningDHV, in partnership with Newcastle University, Cranfield University, Jacobs, Mott MacDonald, Farmiloe Fisher, and Northumbrian Water Ltd. The consortium combines academic excellence with international research and engineering experience to enable rapid dissemination and implementation of findings within the UK water industry to support their Net Zero strategy.
This project aims to deliver a scientifically robust study, performing experiments at scale to investigate environmental and process factors affecting nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from trickling filters (TFs), and to provide evidence for monitoring and mitigation of these greenhouse gases. The UK water industry has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Net Zero 2030 Routemap. There is a significant knowledge gap regarding N2O emissions from TFs, despite over 5,000 WwTWs in the UK treating around 30% of the total load. Currently, there is limited reliable information on emission factors or mitigation strategies for N2O emissions from TFs, partly due to challenges in obtaining accurate in-situ measurements and a lack of international research in this area.
This is a full-time position (37 hours per week) for a fixed term of 9 months, with the possibility of extension to 12 months.
You will primarily be based at the Gateshead campus and will need to travel to Newcastle University campus. A UK driving license is advantageous.
Interviews will be held on 29th August 2024.
