About the role

Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Protection & Control Design Engineer to join our Power Transmission & Distribution business based in Newcastle.

• Provide project leadership as Project Design Lead for electrical substation projects from tendering to project handover.
• Lead design delivery for electrical substations up to 400kV with support from Design Engineers.

What you'll be doing

Responsibilities include:

• Ensure duties comply with Company Quality, Health & Safety, Environmental Procedures, and BMS.
• Meet or exceed safety, quality, schedule, and budget requirements.
• Deliver Protection & Control Systems design for substations.
• Enact CDAE role if appointed, following NG TP188 and standards.
• Coordinate Customer Witness Tests at factories.
• Represent the department in project meetings.
• Manage internal and external interfaces during projects.
• Review estimates and post-tender requirements upon contract award.
• Prepare Project Status Reports (PSR).
• Manage scope changes, raise EWNs/DES06, and monitor TQ/EWN updates.
• Coordinate contract requirements with Project Managers, clients, suppliers, and departments.
• Define work package content and resources to meet project timelines.
• Specify materials, test certificates, and manuals.
• Ensure compliance with standards and legislation.
• Lead design work with regard to Health, Safety & Environmental procedures, including Designer Risk Assessments.

Who we're looking for

Essential qualities/experience:

• HND or higher in Electrical Engineering.
• Extensive HV substation P&C design experience.
• Knowledge of multi-discipline substation design delivery for Grid, SSE, or similar clients.
• Experience in project coordination, estimating, scope change management, and reporting.
• Familiarity with quality assurance and business processes.
• Integrity, professionalism, teamwork, and a customer-focused approach.
• Experience working in a BIM environment is desirable.
