About the role

Balfour Beatty has created iconic buildings and infrastructure worldwide over the past 115 years, redefining excellence and setting industry benchmarks with every project.

We have been selected by BP (British Petroleum) alongside consortium partners to construct a first-of-a-kind fully integrated gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage. This project is a key part of making Teesside the UK's first decarbonised industrial cluster.

We are recruiting a Senior Construction Engineer to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside project at our site in Redcar, Cleveland, Teesside.

Role Purpose:
  1. Assist the Project Manager with scope definition, planning, and daily execution of the construction project. Responsible for maintaining project schedules, managing submittal approvals, coordinating material delivery, and overseeing budgets.
  2. Handle all technical aspects during the Construction phase, including scope definition, design reviews, Technical Queries (TQ's), subcontractor management, cable calculations, final As-Built checks, and ensuring safety and schedule adherence.
  3. Report to the Project Manager and liaise with key team members such as QS, Design, and Planning.
What you'll be doing

Responsibilities include:

  • Defining scope of work packages and execution strategies.
  • Ensuring packages are delivered on time, within budget, and meet safety and quality standards.
  • Maintaining accurate records (RFIs, FCDs, WPPs, MCRs, ITPs, Record Drawings, etc.).
  • Planning plant, access, labor, and materials, including procurement activities.
  • Providing technical input for tenders and assisting with technical queries.
  • Managing subcontracted work packages and overseeing deliverables.
  • Conducting periodic progress meetings with subcontractors.
  • Identifying project risks and raising EWNs as needed.
  • Drafting site instructions with detailed descriptions, impacts, and references to change events.
  • Providing cost information and supporting MTO activities.
  • Liaising with Project and Contract Managers on project progress and risks.
  • Reviewing power distribution and protection systems for LV & MV.
  • Specifying electrical distribution & control equipment, and overseeing related procurement and installation activities.
Who we're looking for

Essential qualities/experience:

  • Previous Construction Engineering experience in relevant industry.
  • Effective communication skills for managing relationships and team coordination.
  • Leadership skills and confidence to influence and deliver targets.
  • Financial awareness and commitment to safety and sustainability.
  • Ability to visit suppliers and monitor activities.

Desirable qualities/experience:

  • Experience with Lean Construction principles.
  • Participation in industry events.
  • Membership in professional bodies (e.g., IET).
  • Proficiency in O365.
  • Valid driving license.

Additional qualifications may include:

  • HNC/HND in Engineering/Construction or equivalent experience.
  • APM PFQ/PMQ/PPQ.
  • CSCS and SMSTS or equivalent.
  • CCNSG / HS&E MAPS certification.
