Main duties of the job

We are pleased to advertise this substantive post for a consultant obstetrician. This is an exciting opportunity to work as part of a highly dedicated multidisciplinary maternity team.

As a Consultant Obstetrician at Princess Anne, you will work closely with a skilled multidisciplinary team, including midwives, neonatologists, anaesthetists, and other healthcare professionals, to deliver individualised, evidence-based care. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring seamless coordination among specialties, fostering a patient-centered approach to provide holistic care. Your expertise will extend to developing and implementing clinical protocols and guidelines, driving quality improvement initiatives, providing education and mentoring junior staff within the unit.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

Key duties of the post:

  • Provision of high risk obstetric clinic services.
  • General obstetric services for the local population including outpatient and inpatient antenatal care, labour ward, and Maternity Day Assessment Unit cover.
  • Provision of elective caesarean section lists.
  • To participate in the non-resident Obstetric On-Call rota
  • Contribution to management, service development, and clinical governance
  • Contribution to undergraduate and postgraduate education and supervision.

Individuals wishing to apply must be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC).

The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.

Qualifications, Training & Experience

Essential criteria

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • MRCOG
  • Completion of Advanced Labour Ward Practice ATSM or equivalent
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • Demonstration of excellence in clinical practice within Obstetrics
  • Significant evidence of continued professional development

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of working as a consultant
  • Completion of other relevant ATSM or equivalent
  • Evidence of running high risk antenatal clinics
  • Attendance at courses/conferences
  • MSc, MD, PhD, or master’s in education or related discipline
  • Certificate of completion of training (CCT) or equivalent achieved or due to be achieved within 6 months of interview

Aptitudes and skills

Essential criteria

  • Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
  • Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors, and staff
  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English).
  • Demonstrate good organisational skills including ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate, and able to respond efficiently to various circumstances, which may change rapidly
  • Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Evidence of participation in clinical governance processes and leadership of change initiatives
  • Ability to provide leadership in service provision and development
  • To be able to travel between sites and on-call
