Are you brilliant at bioscience? Birkbeck, University of London is seeking a Demonstrator to join the School of Natural Sciences and teach part-time this coming Autumn 2025.

As Demonstrator you will teach on 1 or more modules - Practical Skills for the Biosciences, Infectious Bacteria and Antibiotics, Specialist Laboratory Research Project, Sequence Analysis and Omics, Biocomputing, The Molecular Basis of Life, Laboratory Skills in Biochemistry.

You should engage in the scholarship necessary to ensure good practice in teaching and to apply appropriate levels of knowledge in the subject areas to be taught.

Most post-holders taking these roles will be employed as part of their general academic development to obtain practical teaching experience and will undertake this work independently but in parallel with postgraduate studies.

In addition to the criteria specified in the job pack, candidates must have:

  • A degree in bioscience or an equivalent relevant qualification.
  • Confident presentation skills and ability to clearly and effectively pass on specialist subject area knowledge.
  • A good level of IT and communication technology skills particularly in application to standard packages (eg Word, Excel, OneDrive, Outlook, Teams, Moodle, general internet usage).
  • The ability to work both as part of a team and independently and have the ability to support teaching.
  • Awareness of the needs of part-time adult learners and ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students and inspire them to learn.

Remuneration

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £23.96 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 6, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, and other examining duties in connection with the course.

Contract
