Last year, EDF Energy moved over 1,600 packages containing radioactive material to support generation and defuelling at its eight nuclear sites. EDF Energy's Radioactive Materials Package Design Authority plays a crucial role in ensuring that the company has transport solutions to move radioactive material safely and compliantly within the UK and overseas.
We are looking for an engineer to join this team and contribute to the engineering behind the successful delivery of radioactive material transport.
The OpportunityThe Radioactive Materials Transport Package Engineer will work within the multidisciplinary Spent Fuel Services Team that delivers EDF Energy's Dual Mission: the safe defuelling of our AGR nuclear reactors and supporting continued operations of our AGR & PWR nuclear power stations.
The Spent Fuel Services Team is responsible for providing EDF's nuclear sites and stakeholder sites with engineered solutions to enable the safe and compliant transport of radioactive material. Your role will involve managing the design, operation, maintenance, modification, and technical requirements of a broad suite of radioactive material package designs, including the A2 Spent Fuel Flask. You will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders at nuclear power stations, suppliers, and regulators to ensure effective through-life management of these packages. Additionally, you will oversee fleet processes governing their use. This role directly impacts safety and company performance.
This position offers the opportunity to visit EDF's nuclear sites and those of the wider Nuclear Industry and our supply partners. Field work includes providing technical advice, supervising major works, participating in event recovery, and conducting audits and benchmarking. International travel may occasionally be required.
Pay, Benefits And CultureWe offer a competitive salary from £61,730 to £81,263, based on the parameters outlined in the Nuclear Generation Company Agreement, as well as your experience and qualifications. What You'll Be DoingYou will ensure EDF Energy maintains a safe, compliant, and efficient capability to transport radioactive materials within the UK and abroad.
Responsibilities include:
- Ensuring transport packages are suitably designed and certified according to regulations;
- Collaborating with supply chain partners on design, manufacture, and maintenance;
- Providing technical support at stations and suppliers;
- Producing and reviewing technical documents, including finite-element analysis and shielding calculations;
- Guiding operation, maintenance, and modifications of transport packages;
- Supporting projects related to transport packages;
- Advising end users on transport solutions;
- Managing quality arrangements for compliant operation;
- Maintaining through-life records of transport packages;
- Mentoring staff on regulations.
Who You AreYou hold at least an HNC in Mathematics, Science, or Engineering, with a degree being advantageous.
You have experience in a highly regulated industry and awareness of the nuclear sector.
Skills and experience include:
- Technical and analytical expertise;
- Problem-solving and quick learning;
- Stakeholder management across multiple sites and suppliers;
- Ability to respond swiftly to operational issues;
- Clear communication skills;
- Long-term planning and prioritization;
- Experience managing suppliers and contracts;
- Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental legislation.
Desirable qualifications include familiarity with EDF Energy AGR/PWR operations, Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations, IAEA Regulations, and previous experience in radioactive material transport. Security vetting requires UK residency for at least 3 of the last 5 years.
