This is an exciting time to join the Port of London’s IT department as we embark on an ambitious replacement and upgrade programme enhancing standards, security, and user experience.

We are pleased to offer a role for a Field Engineer:

Working as part of a team of 4, focusing on RADAR, VHF, and microwave systems, you'll ensure the maintenance of existing assets and support our upgrade programme.

The role involves being part of an on-call rota, providing out-of-hours support, including weekends, with days off scheduled accordingly.

Our team works with some unusual technology across various locations, often at heights, with full safety training provided.

Who We Are

The Port of London Authority manages 95 miles of the tidal Thames, ensuring safety, environmental protection, and promoting river use. Our IT department supports operational systems critical for navigation and safety, including radar, vessel tracking, and communications infrastructure.

What We Are Looking For

Proactive, tech-curious individuals with excellent communication and problem-solving skills. Customer focus, attention to detail, and the ability to work calmly under pressure are essential. Teamwork and independence are valued traits.

Role And Responsibilities
  • Maintain navigation systems sensors to ensure operational safety.
  • Diagnose and resolve faults professionally and promptly.
  • Escalate issues and document actions taken.
  • Install, monitor, and maintain equipment.
  • Contribute to maintenance and replacement planning.
  • Research and specify new equipment, assist in procurement.
  • Manage projects related to equipment replacement.
  • Maintain technical documentation and safety records.
  • Supervise on-site work, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
  • Support GDPR and cybersecurity compliance.
  • Undertake ongoing training to maintain expertise.
  • Contribute to team development.
  • Adhere to service levels and policies.
Qualifications And Education Requirements
  • Degree in electronic engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Knowledge of H&S regulations (PUWER, LOLER, Working at Height, COSHH).
  • Understanding of risks like WaH, EMF, and mitigations.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity principles (Cyber Essentials).
  • Full driving licence.
Essential Criteria
  • Deep technical knowledge of electrical, electronic, and telecommunications systems.
  • IP networking and IT skills for system maintenance.
  • Ability to work at height with necessary certifications.
  • Certifications in Sea Survival, Fire Awareness, Manual Handling, First Aid, Confined Spaces, etc.
  • Medical clearance and fitness to perform role safely.
  • Security clearance (BPSS, CTC).
  • Strong diagnostic, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Commitment to professional development.
  • Safety-conscious with leadership qualities.
  • Ability to build effective relationships and promote teamwork.
  • Flexibility for out-of-hours work and on-call duties.
