Job description

Job Summary

Following a review of workload and processes across the inpatient pathway, 3 additional posts have been created in the acute IP service in LYPFT, where each ward will be staffed by a full-time Consultant Psychiatrist and either a Multi-Professional Approved Clinician (MPAC, e.g., Nurse Consultant) or a less than full-time Consultant Psychiatrist. The successful applicants will provide additional medical and clinical leadership to the acute inpatient service across the Becklin and the Newsam centres.

We are seeking two less than full-time Consultant Psychiatrists to work alongside a full-time Consultant on the male wards - Ward 3 Becklin and Ward 4 Newsam.

The bed base will be shared proportionately between the two Consultants so that the full-time post holder does not hold responsibility for more than 16 beds at any one time (except for short periods when providing cover). Ward 5 (a female acute ward) already operates under a similar model with a full-time Consultant Psychiatrist and an MPAC.

Main Duties of the Job

Each acute ward accepts admissions from across Leeds. Bed occupancy is likely to be above 90%, with most patients detained. Common co-morbidities include substance misuse and personality disorder. The primary reasons for admission are relapse of psychotic illness or mood disorder. The Consultant Psychiatrist will be responsible for their bed base, providing clinical expertise in assessment and management of this acutely unwell group. The day begins with the PIPA report-out meeting at 9am, a structured MDT review to establish daily tasks.

This model aims to reduce workload and share risk and complexity through collaborative expertise and opinion, especially in complex cases.

An important priority is to minimize out-of-area admissions and ensure local access to acute mental healthcare. Sound clinical decision-making within the MDT and effective liaison are essential components of this role.
