Assistant Aquatic Ecologist / Consultant Aquatic Ecologist

Type: Permanent, Full-time

In this role, you will provide aquatic ecological support for existing and new projects, offering ecological services to the Group. The role involves consultancy expertise across all freshwater ecology disciplines, including sampling, identification, and interpretation of macroinvertebrates in freshwater habitats. While we are ideally seeking a consultant, we are open to considering other grades.
More About The Role
- Conduct ecological site assessments of aquatic fauna and flora, and complete related reports.
- Process and analyze aquatic macroinvertebrate samples using methods such as RICT 2, BMWP, ASPT, WHPT.
- Respond to environmental incidents, perform necessary fieldwork, and compile ecological impact assessment reports.
- Advise the Group and clients on potential ecological impacts of emergency and planned works.
- Author reports, develop monitoring strategies, and collaborate within multi-disciplinary teams to provide specialist input.
- Lead small survey teams for macroinvertebrate, RCA, and electrofishing surveys, supporting larger surveys.
- Assist in business development and marketing efforts.
- Support the wider Water & Ecology team in project delivery.
- Prepare quotes for small-scale projects.
- Manage workloads to ensure successful and profitable project delivery.
- Manage medium-sized or multiple small-scale projects effectively.
About You
- Experience in ecological consultancy, especially in aquatic environments.
- Understanding of survey techniques for fish and macroinvertebrates.
- Knowledge of legislation related to aquatic environments, particularly the Water Framework Directive.
- Strong time management, communication skills, and ability to work with internal and external clients both locally and nationally.
- Willingness to learn new skills and flexibility regarding travel and working hours across the UK.
- Degree qualification in an environmental subject with substantial experience in aquatic ecology.
- Higher degree in Aquatic Ecology or related discipline is advantageous.
- Membership of a professional environmental body.
- Previous commercial or regulatory experience is desirable.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; experience with specialist computer programs is a plus.
- Full UK driving license.
