General Functions

  • A Principal shall be required to carry out his/her professional duties in accordance with the school’s policy and objectives as determined by the employing authority and, in the case of a controlled school, the Board of Governors, obeying the reasonable directions of the employing authority and the Board of Governors.
  • Subject to paragraph 1, the Principal shall be responsible for the internal organisation, management, and control of the school.
  • In carrying out duties, the Principal shall consult with the employing authority, staff, and the Board of Governors where appropriate.

Professional Duties

The professional duties include:

  • Formulating the school's aims and policies;
  • Participating in staff recruitment;
  • Deploying and managing staff, including duties of the Vice-Principal or other staff;
  • Maintaining relationships with staff and external organisations;
  • Organising and implementing curriculum;
  • Monitoring school work and organisation;
  • Evaluating teaching and learning standards;
  • Providing staff performance information;
  • Participating in staff development schemes;
  • Monitoring and recording pupil progress;
  • Implementing pastoral care policies;
  • Promoting good behaviour and discipline;
  • Communicating with parents;
  • Building relationships with external bodies;
  • Advising the Board of Governors;
  • Reporting to the employing authority;
  • Maintaining school resources and safety;
  • Participating in staff development and training;
  • Arranging for a Vice-Principal during absence;
  • Participating in teaching and providing cover;
  • Ensuring a break of at least 30 minutes between 12 noon and 2 pm;
  • Participating in the Performance Review and Staff Development (PRSD) for Principals.

Additional duties include staff management, training, and development, with emphasis on supporting newly-qualified teachers and those returning to teaching.
