The European Lung Foundation (ELF) works to improve lung health across Europe by offering resources and a platform to patients, patient organisations and the public to help shape respiratory care. We are dedicated to ensuring everyone living with a lung condition has access to clear and evidence-based information, no matter where they live or what language they speak.

The role

We are looking for a Communications and Outreach Assistant to help deliver accessible, engaging communications to patients, the public and partner organisations across Europe.

This is an early-career role that blends digital communications with hands-on outreach. You will help produce content for social media and newsletters, support patient education activities and play a part in building strong relationships with individual patients and patient organisations.

Our communications evolve in response to the needs of our audiences and the changing digital landscape, so we are looking for someone who is confident working in a dynamic environment and keen to contribute ideas. Whether your strengths lie in content creation, community building or inclusive outreach, there is space to grow and shape your work.

You will be part of an experienced and supportive team where collaboration is key. Your colleagues bring a wealth of knowledge, kindness and enthusiasm to the work. You will work closely with them to deliver clear, inclusive and impactful communications.

What you will do:

  • Develop and share engaging social media content (reels, graphics, posts) that raises awareness and sparks involvement
  • Coordinate and curate ELF’s bi-monthly newsletter, reaching 10,000+ subscribers with relevant and timely updates
  • Keep our website content updated and accessible, using WordPress and lay language
  • Support education outreach and ensure materials are translated and distributed in multiple languages, reaching patients and families across Europe and around the world
  • Proactively build relationships with individuals and patient organisations: by email, phone, video call or at events
  • Help coordinate patient-led events and drop-in sessions, managing logistics and ensuring inclusive participation
  • Encourage patient and public involvement in ELF’s projects, surveys and opportunities
  • Support the wider team with admin tasks

What we are looking for:

  • Some experience in communications and/or outreach (can be gained through study, volunteering or relevant roles)
  • Strong people skills—confident, compassionate and able to connect with a wide range of audiences
  • Excellent written communication skills, with a flair for turning complex ideas into engaging, accessible content
  • Organised, proactive and able to juggle multiple tasks and deadlines
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office and Canva; basic WordPress skills are a bonus (although training is available)
  • An interest in health communications, education equity or patient advocacy
  • Willing to pick up the phone and make everyone feel welcome

Why this role matters

This role involves working closely with patient organisations, while also engaging directly with individuals through accessible content and communications. Too often, patients who could benefit most from support and education are the ones least likely to access it. At ELF, we are committed to changing that and we need someone who shares our drive to ensure no one is left behind. This role offers the chance to build meaningful relationships, shape how we communicate and make a real difference on a European scale.
