Job summary

A leading health board in Wales is seeking a full-time locum consultant in Ophthalmology for a fixed term of 12 months. The successful candidate will join a team of 16 consultants and provide a comprehensive clinical service while participating in on-call duties. Qualifications

  • On Specialist Register with GMC in OPHTHALMOLOGY or eligible for CCT within 6 months.
  • High standard of clinical skill in ophthalmology, including complex cataract surgery.
  • Experience in emergency cover, teaching, audit, and leadership.

  • Provide clinical service including prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness.

Job description

Full time locum consultant post, fixed term for 12 months in the first instance to support Cataract services.

The post will be based at Singleton Hospital in Swansea, where the successful applicant will join a team of 16 Consultants responsible for the provision of Ophthalmology services to the Health Board. The successful applicant will participate in the 1 in 15 on-call rota at Singleton Hospital, with prospective cover. In exceptional circumstances, duties at other locations within the Health Board may be required. Travel between hospitals/clinics may be necessary, with expenses reimbursed according to policy.

The Surgical Specialties Directorate serves Neath Port Talbot Hospital, Morriston, and Singleton Hospitals, providing regional services along the M4 corridor and West Wales.

Main duties of the job

You will provide a clinical service, including the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness. Working with colleagues and the multidisciplinary team, you will have responsibility for patient well-being, staff training, and service improvement, adhering to GMC principles and participating in risk management and governance activities.

Qualifications
  • On Specialist Register with GMC as a specialist in OPHTHALMOLOGY or eligible for CCT within 6 months of interview, with relevant qualifications and registration.

  • GMC registration and license to practice.
  • Teaching/higher medical education qualification.

  • Sub-specialty training to a level appropriate for UK consultant practice.
  • High standard of clinical skill in ophthalmology, including complex cataract surgery.
  • Experience in emergency cover, teaching, audit, and leadership.
  • Effective communication skills and understanding of information systems.
  • Ability to provide expert clinical opinions and independent responsibility for patient care.
  • Learning in improvement science and service enhancement.
