Introduction

Hays Care & Custody (C&C) is driven by a bold vision: to establish HMP Millsike as a place of restoration and rehabilitation, where prisoners can unlock their full potential and make meaningful, positive changes in their lives. We are excited by the opportunity Millsike presents: a blank canvas on which we can paint a bright future for our prisoners. Our mission is clear: to create an environment that empowers, inspires, and supports individuals to re-enter society with hope, purpose, and a life plan. To achieve this, we will set a culture of rehabilitation and restoration underpinned by integrity and high expectations. Prisoners will experience a dramatic shift from traditional prison environments. Millsike will be a vibrant, bustling community, teeming with industry, activity, and opportunities for personal growth. Above all, we will ensure our approach offers a deep sense of safety and respect, through a supportive, uplifting environment, that helps prisoners see their potential and unlock a brighter future for all.

Job Objectives and Responsibilities

We are seeking a dedicated professional to carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance. The successful candidate will ensure that SHE standards are maintained and will liaise with engineers and subcontractors. A proactive approach to client liaison is essential, ensuring concerns are addressed or relayed to management as necessary.

The role requires compliance with and enforcement of existing business risk management procedures for maintenance and project works. You will need to understand and complete all work-related documentation accurately and on time. Additionally, you will investigate and report in detail on infrastructure shortfalls, problems, and incidents, recommending options for remedial actions.

Coordination of connections to existing plant/systems and effective use and maintenance of O&M Manuals and quality procedures are also key responsibilities. The position requires availability for scheduled and unplanned weekend working. Compliance with company and statutory regulations relating to safe systems of work, health and safety, hygiene, cleanliness, and localised fire regulation procedures is mandatory.

The site is a 24-hour, 365-day operation, and the engineering team will work to a shift rota pattern and offer out-of-hours call-out functions.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate should possess one of the following certificates: Apprenticeship or equivalent, IOSH or equivalent, C&G/BTEC Mechanical and Electrical Building Services Engineering Parts 1, 2, and 3, NVQ with multi-skilled engineering Level 3, C&G 2079 F Gas or equivalent, HVAC or gas equivalent, or C&G 2391/2 18th edition IEE regulations.

Candidates must have previous relevant experience in providing electrical maintenance services in a large, complex environment. Basic to intermediate IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook, along with some experience in updating records, are essential.

The ability to communicate effectively at all levels, both verbally and in writing, including note-taking, is required. Excellent interpersonal skills and self-motivation are crucial.

Substantial practical experience with a comprehensive knowledge of all building services disciplines, including heating, hot water, ventilating, refrigeration, environmental, electrical power and distribution, and public health, is necessary.

The candidate should be a team worker with flexibility within the contracted hours, a strong team player with a ‘can do' attitude, and possess an intuitive and proactive nature. If you are a detail-oriented professional with a commitment to maintaining high standards, we encourage you to apply.

As a business, Hays Care & Custody is committed to diversity and inclusion and we would welcome applications from a wide range of backgrounds including veterans, those looking for a career change, and people who have experience in social care or a learning environment. Full training will be given where applicable, and we would encourage anyone who might be thinking about a role in a secure establishment to get in touch.
