Role: SENIOR MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER
Location: Arbroath, Scotland OR Aylesbury, England OR Ballymena, NI (open to remote locations in the UK for the right candidate)

What would a typical day be like?
As a Senior Mechanical Designer, you will:
- Be responsible for the creation and development of design solutions for special purpose high-speed automated life science assembly and packaging machinery projects.
- Produce technical documentation for life science projects, including GAMP 5 design and validation documents.
- Provide the Application Engineering team with quotation support through drawings, concepts, and budgets.
- Communicate effectively with customers, suppliers, and team members.
- Work closely with other engineering disciplines to ensure product performance, reliability, and cost expectations are met.
- Perform engineering calculations to validate functionality, component sizing, speeds/rates, failure modes, etc., to ensure the designed solution is feasible, robust, and reliable.
- Collaborate on design solutions with cross-functional teams (Electrical Design, Controls, Assembly).
- Develop concepts and 3D designs based on proposals from the Applications group, aligning the design with contractual scope and functional requirements.
- Ensure solutions meet required compliance standards, including safety and ergonomics.
- Lead interactive design reviews, both internal and customer-facing, to communicate design direction confidently and clearly, while incorporating cross-functional input.
- Collaborate with the Supply Chain group to source and select major third-party technical vendors.
- Produce 2D assembly and manufacturing drawings, pneumatic schematics, Bills of Materials, Spare Parts lists, and assist with deliverable documentation.
- Review concepts, designs, and drawings from other designers for feasibility, accuracy, and alignment with standards.
- Assist in developing other Mechanical Designers through coaching and mentorship.
- Interact with Project Lead, Mechanical Assembly Team Leads, and Project Managers to communicate project status, issues, risks, scope items, forecasts, and challenges.
- Support manufacturing and build stages through troubleshooting, problem-solving, and debugging.
- Contribute to improving the Mechanical Design group via initiatives and process improvements.

- If appointed as Mechanical Project Lead, drive project design direction, delegate tasks, participate in meetings, manage budgets and schedules, and oversee the success of the mechanical design portion.
What qualifies you for this opportunity?
- 10+ years experience in Mechanical Design.
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in mechanical, electrical, or controls technology, with at least eight years relevant work experience.
- Strong concept design capability, especially in life science assembly systems.
- Experience with complex mechanism design (high-speed servo pick and place systems, robotics).
- Knowledge of asynchronous & synchronous transport systems.
- Proficiency with life science design requirements, material selection, tolerance stack-up, and component selection based on functional needs.
- Hands-on experience in automation design, including 3D CAD, 2D drawings, and troubleshooting on the floor.
- Excellent communication skills for project updates, issues, and scope management.
- Ability to perform engineering calculations related to force, movement, energy, and timings.
- Leadership qualities to motivate and mentor team members, embodying Convergix values.
- Problem-solving tenacity and ownership with a sense of urgency.
- Experience with cycle time analysis, process breakdowns, and defining critical requirements.
- Knowledge of pneumatics, hydraulics, electrical components.
- Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor, Vault Pro, SolidWorks, PDM, AutoCAD.
- Ability to interpret mechanical drawings.
- Familiarity with equipment design standards (ISO, ANSI, CSA, OSHA, CE).
- GAMP 5 experience.
- Effective communication of technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- Willingness and ability to travel within the US, Canada, and the UK (at least annually).
