We’re looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Assistant Engineer to join our Highways team and support the delivery of essential improvements across Luton’s Road network.
In this key role, you’ll support the Engineering Delivery Team Leader in maintaining and improving Luton’s highways infrastructure. You’ll play an active part in delivering local safety and traffic management schemes, contributing directly to projects that enhance the everyday lives of residents and visitors.
Your Responsibilities Will Include
- Designing and delivering highways schemes as part of the Council’s capital works programme.
- Managing elements of the Structural Maintenance revenue programme, including drainage and surface renewal.
- Providing a joined-up approach to project management, contract administration, and civil engineering delivery.
You’ll work closely with internal teams, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure projects are well-managed and delivered on time, to budget, and to high technical standards.
About You
You’ll have solid experience in structural maintenance and highway engineering schemes, with a clear understanding of how to manage projects effectively in terms of performance, timelines, and budgets. You’re confident in developing and prioritising programmes of engineering work, and have the ability to explain complex technical issues clearly to a wide range of audiences.
Collaboration comes naturally to you—you’re able to work constructively with contractors, colleagues, and a range of stakeholders, both internal and external. You’ll also be skilled in producing clear, concise reports and correspondence on often complex matters.
You’re highly organised, able to plan and manage your own workload, and thrive when working to deadlines and within budget. Your understanding of relevant legislation, regulations, and contract procedures ensures you work confidently and compliantly. You’ll also bring knowledge of project management principles and techniques, and hold a BTEC, HNC/D, degree or equivalent qualification in an engineering-related discipline.
