OVERVIEW OF THE JOB
The Residential Life Coordinator is the primary point of contact for our over-18 Further and Higher Education students living in college accommodation. This is a key pastoral role focused on supporting students during a transformative stage in their personal and academic development.
The RLC will build meaningful, trust-based relationships with students, offering support, guidance, and a listening ear. Working closely with the welfare team, they will contribute to the overall health and well-being of residents by identifying and following up on concerns, and ensuring students feel safe, heard, and valued within the college community. In addition to pastoral support, the RLC will help foster a vibrant and inclusive residential experience by creating social opportunities and coordinating activities that promote connection, friendship, and a strong sense of belonging among students. The role also includes providing assistance to the boarding team throughout the academic year, and during the college’s summer school programme as required. This is a role that combines day-to-day support with community-building, and is central to the residential experience at the college.
REPORTS TO
You will be directly responsible to the Head of Boarding and Residential Life. You will work within the framework set by and under the general direction of the Rector.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE JOB
- Work with the Head of Boarding and Residential Life to ensure the smooth running of the residence, maintaining a friendly, welcome, and happy environment.
- Be determined to ensure the College’s students are provided with a positive, purposeful, safe, and fun residential environment that promotes their learning and development.
- Be the main point of contact for the over 18 FE and HE students in the external residences, meeting with them as needed, both individually and communally.
- Assist the boarding team during summer school when there are fewer over-18s to manage.
- Monitor and follow up on notes raised on the college’s central database regarding student welfare, academic concerns, and residential issues.
- Conduct termly health and safety checks of student rooms.
- Ensure a visible presence in the Residences when on duty, maintaining a safe and positive community in residence through active engagement with students and policy enforcement.
- Attend weekly welfare meetings with the safeguarding team.
- Act as Fire Marshall. Respond to and assist with emergencies such as fire alarms if in the building even when not formally on duty.
- Gather and provide student feedback to the Head of Boarding and Residential Life.
- Induct new residential staff to their duties and the residences when appropriate.
- Provide administrative support for the Head of Boarding and Residential Life as requested.
- Oversee approval of overnight leave requests and ensure all information is checked thoroughly.
- Monitor student welfare and behaviour and report any problems to the Head of Boarding and Residential Life and/or the Welfare Team.
- Manage, and where required, participate in the investigation and monitoring of consequences for reported cases of misbehaviour and breaches of college rules by students. Issue behaviour stages up to Stage 3.
- Guide and support students in maintaining daily cleanliness in their clusters, including taking out the bins and keeping the kitchens tidy. Working closely with the cleaning team, actively encourage compliance and address non-compliance with appropriate follow-up actions and consequences.
- Maintain cleanliness in and around the boarding houses by ensuring that they are conducting regular patrols, clearing away litter when it is spotted, addressing and reporting incidents of fly-tipping, and collaborating with the domestic team to ensure a clean and welcoming environment.
- Actively monitor, respond, and report on building issues, including maintenance requests and safety issues. Submit maintenance requests promptly through SysAid system to ensure timely resolution.
- Work closely with the welfare team and healthcare centre to ensure healthcare issues are followed up and monitored appropriately. In emergencies, use the emergency contact number or call an ambulance immediately.
- Follow up on students who appear on the attendance list as appropriate and report to the welfare team if necessary. Report any missing students as per the College’s missing person policy.
- Lead the process for student arrivals, student induction and departures.
- Ensure that the full student induction process is fit for purpose taking the lead for the induction of over 18/HE students into the residential environment and working closely with others to ensure that the wider induction process is effective and prioritises the welfare and wellbeing of the students.
- Attend any meetings required by the Head of Boarding and Residential Life, such as team meetings and 1:1s.
- Attend College boarding and welfare training days.
- Ensure House Leaders/Deputy House Leaders are informed of any issues that need monitoring while away.
- Report concerns or praises via the College database (Shackleton) and to the appropriate staff immediately.
- Issue keys/cards as required.
- Take responsibility for co-ordinating a crisis management plan while on duty in the absence of the Head of Boarding and Residential Life, ensuring the relevant members of senior staff are informed.

- Knowledge of National Minimum Standards (NMS), Independent Schools’ Statutory Regulations (ISI) and other relevant current child protection legislation.
- The ability to work with, care for and supervise young people.
