Diabetes Specialist Nurse

Band 7

Permanent

37.5 Hours per week

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Diabetes Specialist Nurse (DSN) to be at the forefront of driving up standards and quality in diabetes care within the Diabetes team of Liverpool University Hospitals (Aintree Hospital) and The Walton Centre.

The role will also include working in a variety of clinical areas including inpatient diabetes nurse service, outpatient clinics including complex MDT foot clinic within the Diabetes Centre and community clinics. It will include sub specialist clinics e.g. antenatal clinic, pre-operative assessment clinic at The Walton Centre.

The successful applicant must have experience of working autonomously within the field of Diabetes and with the ability to work to evidence-based guidelines audit the care given to patients to make and suggest improvements in services.

The post holder will also be required to deliver complex educational packages to health care professionals and patients around effective diabetes management.

Main duties of the job

Act as Diabetes clinical expert and professional resource to Multi-Professional teams, patients and carers within the Speciality service. The post holder will support the development of specialist area of practice in partnership with other members of the speciality teams across Acute, Community and Primary Care Service. The post holder will carry responsibility for a defined case load and offer highly specialist advice, setting standards of care, the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care. The post holder will contribute to achieving the objectives of the clinical service group/speciality corporate objectives and work within the clinical governance framework They will lead the development and delivery of a programme of practice and professional development for delivery of care within the specialist area across the Acute hospital areas (Aintree and The Walton Centre)

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • RGN with current NMC registration
  • Degree (or equivalent)
  • Post-registration qualification in diabetes
  • Teaching and assessing qualification


Desirable

  • Research qualification
  • Recordable specialist qualification
  • Masters
  • Independent Nurse Prescriber


Experience

Essential

  • Clinical experience with specific experience within Diabetes.
  • Evidence of undertaking the relevant speciality successfully at Band 6
  • Experience of teaching and assessing in the clinical area.
  • Experience in service development and implementation of change
  • Involvement in audit


Desirable

  • Experience of caring for patients using insulin pumps

  • Ability to effectively communicate sensitive information in a variety of settings.
  • Organisation and negotiation skills
  • Able to present information to professional groups.
  • Leadership & motivation skills
