REPORTS TO: Principal

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER

TEACHERS’ (TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT) REGULATIONS

(NORTHERN IRELAND) 1987

1) Exercise of general professional duties

A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require:

  • (a) if employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal;
  • (b) if employed by a board on terms under which he/she is not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school where required to work.

2) Exercise of particular duties

(a) A teacher (other than a principal) shall perform, in accordance with directions from the principal, such duties as may be reasonably assigned.

(b) Teachers employed under paragraph 1(b) shall perform duties as directed by the board or the principal of the school where they work.

3. Main Responsibilities

  1. Planning
  • Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
  • Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work;
  • Assessing, recording, and reporting on pupils’ development, progress, and attainment.
  • General Responsibilities
    • Promoting pupils’ progress and well-being;
    • Providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters, including further education and careers;
    • Making records and reports on pupils’ personal and social needs;
    • Communicating with parents and external bodies;
    • Participating in relevant meetings.
  • Assessment/Reporting
    • Providing assessments, reports, and references for pupils, maintaining confidentiality where necessary.
  • Staff Development
    • Participating in staff development schemes;
    • Reviewing and developing teaching methods and programmes;
    • Contributing to curriculum and pastoral development.
  • Discipline/Health and Safety
    • Maintaining good order and safeguarding health and safety;
    • Participating in school meetings related to curriculum and administration.
  • Public Examinations
    • Preparing pupils for public exams, assessing and supervising pupils during exams.
  • Management and Administration
    • Contributing to staff recruitment and development;
    • Managing or coordinating other teachers’ work;
    • Participating in curriculum, organisation, and pastoral management;
    • Completing administrative tasks, including support staff supervision and resource management.
  • Working Hours and Days
    • Availability for 195 days/year; up to 190 days for teaching;
    • Perform duties as specified by the Principal, including hours and locations;
    • Teaching hours limited to weekly maximums; breaks and supervision duties outlined.
  • Staff Cover
    • Supervising pupils in the absence of teachers, subject to enrolment and other conditions.
