Salary: £31,298 per annum

Hours: Full-Time

Contract Type: 1 Year Fixed Term Contract (with the intent to extend to 3 years)

Location: STFC - Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Harwell, Oxfordshire

Introduction

Join us to work with some of the world's best facilities and scientists, making impactful contributions to cutting-edge research in laser inertial fusion energy (IFE). This role is part of the UK Programme of Laser Inertial Fusion Technology for Energy (UPLiFT), a £10M, 4-year research initiative funded by the UK government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

About the Role

You will be part of the Target Fabrication team supporting UPLiFT, focusing on developing low-density target production techniques using chemical methods and commissioning research on the 2-photon-polymerisation (2PP) system. Your responsibilities include understanding target parameters, collaborating with external experts, and supporting experimental campaigns to produce high-quality targets.

Key Responsibilities
  • Commission and research the capabilities of the 2PP system, including developing shell and foam targets.
  • Engage with the user community to determine target requirements and scientific directions.
  • Produce low-density samples and develop novel production processes.
  • Collaborate with other technical teams on target design and report findings.
  • Support the wider experimental capabilities of the target fabrication group.
About You

You hold a degree or relevant experience in chemistry or a related scientific field, with experience in process development and target fabrication science. Familiarity with target manufacture facilities, project management, and modeling or simulation skills are desirable. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are essential.

Person Specification
  • Degree in chemistry or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Knowledge of target fabrication techniques
  • Experience in developing target systems or technologies
  • Project management experience
  • Ability to work collaboratively and seek innovative solutions
