Main duties of the job

The ANP/TANP role is a key part of the TYA Team. This post is aimed at developing new ways of working for senior cancer nurses as an ANP or TANP within the Teenage Cancer Trust inpatient and day unit.
With mentor support, the ANP/ TANP will integrate into the existing oncology team to carry out their extended roles, which will include routine management of the TYA oncology patient, including practical procedures and the admission of TYA patients.

Using advanced clinical decision-making and assessment skills, prompt treatment plans or referrals will be initiated to effectively manage acute and chronic cancer-related complications and/or toxicities from systemic anti-cancer treatments and/or radiotherapy; fundamentally working as an autonomous and advanced practitioner. They will act as a highly specialised role model and leader for all members of staff. The post holder will be involved in the further development of the TYA service within the Trust in line with the TYA service specifications.

  • Provide clinical leadership and maintain credibility through practice and professional update.
  • Practice evidence-based nursing care to ensure high-quality care.
  • Act as an expert nurse and resource for patients, families, and staff.
  • To integrate into the existing clinical structure and support other professionals in managing routine care of TYA patients by collaborating with the key worker.
  • Admit and discharge or transfer patients as their needs require.
  • Undertake advanced clinical assessments of acutely unwell oncology patients to enable prompt assessment, diagnosis, and treatment according to policies, protocols, and guidelines.

Education/Qualifications

  • First level registration / Degree in relevant subject
  • Possess a Cancer Specialist qualification
  • MSc Advanced Practice or evidence of Level 7 study - working towards MSc in Advanced Practice and willingness to complete MSc studies
  • Teaching qualification/experience
  • Non-Medical prescribing
  • Teenage and young adult/adult acute care experience
  • Evidence of recent continued professional development
  • Up-to-date Advanced Life Support qualification
