Job description

This vacancy is for a Laboratory Scientist Apprentice within the Analytical Strategy and Operations team at Bristol Myers Squibb, a pharmaceutical company near Liverpool. This 4-year apprenticeship involves laboratory-based training and enrolment in a higher education course in chemical sciences, leading to a degree qualification. The successful candidate will gain hands-on experience in pharmaceutical analysis, utilising a range of analytical chemistry techniques in the analysis of medicines.

Qualification Requirements

  • 5 GCSEs at Grades C/4 or above (or equivalent) including Mathematics and English
  • Will have, or are predicted, A Levels equalling 104 UCAS points, including Chemistry at Grade C or above plus an additional Science or Mathematics.
  • Equivalent Level 3 qualifications (e.g., BTEC) will also be considered (with a minimum requirement of 104 UCAS points).

Salary - £23,000 per annum

Job Responsibilities

The ASO Moreton team utilizes fundamental scientific principles and analytical techniques to assess the key quality attributes of drug substances and products for release and stability. Once trained, apprentices will independently contribute to:

  • Performing routine analytical procedures, including sample preparation, data collection, and analysis.
  • Maintaining accurate and detailed records of experiments, results, and observations.
  • Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, ensuring proper calibration and functionality.
  • Following standard operating procedures (SOPs) and adhering to safety and quality guidelines.
  • Participating in the validation and technology transfer of new analytical methods.
  • Supporting the preparation of technical reports, summaries, and presentations.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure timely project completion.
  • Assisting in inventory management of laboratory supplies and reagents.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives within the laboratory.

Training and Development:

Apprentices form part of our Early Career Programme and are encouraged and supported to participate in internal and external conferences and network opportunities.

Full training will be provided to meet the requirements of working in a regulated environment and complying with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). Apprentices are expected to adhere to all safety, health, and environmental regulations.
