Job description

Laboratory Manager - Fixed Term Contract

This role reports to the Business Unit Manager for Food Testing in Linlithgow and is responsible for the safe, efficient, and high-quality operation of the Food Testing Laboratory.

This is a one-year fixed-term, full-time position, working 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 09:30 - 18:00.

  1. Manage the team, including recruitment, rotas, leave, sickness, training, mentoring, motivation, and disciplinary matters.
  2. Maintain and update staff skills training matrix.
  3. Oversee data transfer, result reporting, and confidentiality.
  4. Collaborate with customers to meet their laboratory requirements.
  5. Ensure compliance with the Laboratory Quality Manual and policies.
  6. Handle complaints and investigations promptly and to a high standard.
  7. Promote continuous improvement in the laboratory’s performance.
  8. Ensure work meets client requirements within agreed timeframes.
  9. Maintain and calibrate equipment, ensuring safety and standards.
  10. Manage laboratory environment and liaise with facilities as needed.
  11. Complete internal and participate in external audits.
  12. Control costs and support project and capital investment planning.
  13. Use KPIs to monitor and improve productivity and performance.
  14. Manage waste and ensure safety standards are maintained.
  15. Ensure all work complies with procedures, and samples are correctly handled and documented.
  16. Manage projects, keeping stakeholders informed.
  17. Work with stock control to ensure adequate supplies.
  18. Prioritize staff safety and provide necessary training in line with H&S regulations.
  19. Foster a culture of continuous improvement and staff ownership of their environment.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Degree or equivalent in Microbiology/Biological Science.
  • Technical knowledge of food testing processes.
  • Knowledge of UKAS and ISO methods.
  • Supervisory or managerial experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Proficiency in IT, including LIMS and databases.
  • Experience working with diverse internal and external customers.
  • Proven ability to meet and exceed targets.
  • Strong leadership and performance management skills.
  • Customer-focused and safety-oriented mindset.
