Job description

Job Title: Trainee Clinical Perfusionist

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic trainee to join the Clinical Perfusion department at St Thomas' Hospital. The successful candidate will participate in a two-year training program, learning to perform cardiopulmonary bypass and other perfusion techniques.

Training and Qualifications
  1. Attend Bristol University to study for an MSc in Perfusion Science.
  2. Develop clinical skills by performing 150 supervised cardiopulmonary bypass cases to qualify for the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists practical exam, leading to accreditation and registration with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists.
  3. Minimum 2:1 degree in a relevant science subject is required for eligibility.
Responsibilities
  1. Under supervision, undertake various perfusion techniques during routine and emergency cardiopulmonary bypass procedures.
  2. Assess patients' medical history, pathology, and diagnosis to inform procedural decisions.
  3. Set up, prime, and manage cardiopulmonary bypass equipment to maintain life support.
  4. Analyze and interpret blood gases and coagulation status.
  5. Administer drugs such as fluids, vasoactive agents, cardioplegia, potassium, anticoagulants, and haemostatic drugs under supervision.
  6. Manipulate the patient's cardiovascular system during CPB.
  7. Assist with haemofiltration and blood transfusions as needed.
  8. Participate in quality control, calibration, and maintenance of medical equipment, ensuring compliance with policies.
  9. Understand and assist with intra-aortic balloon counter pulsation.
  10. Ensure all patient data and records are complete, accurate, and properly stored in line with trust and professional guidelines.
