Job description

Part Time Finance Manager (Charity) - Exeter or Newton Abbot / Hybrid - £45,829 FTE

Trial Balance Consulting are delighted to have been exclusively engaged by a new client, a well-established and very highly respected charity that operates community services throughout Devon. The organisation has asked us to source its new Finance Manager, a pivotal appointment and a highly visible role working as part of the senior management team. This is a permanent, part-time role working approx. 18 hours per week over a 2-3 day working week. The charity is incredibly flexible as to how these working patterns are agreed and are open to any combination of days and working schedules. The role can be based at either their Exeter, Newton Abbot or Exmouth sites and the successful candidate can opt for one day per week of hybrid working if required.

Joining a passionate and dedicated senior management team from day one, this will be a pivotal role within the charity where the successful candidate will take a lead role in managing the organisation's operational financial health. Working closely with the charity's CEO and its board of trustees, the Finance Manager will work to develop and maintain a highly efficient and effective function that supports the organisation's future growth. Key aspects of the role include:

  1. Support and advise the CEO, senior management team, and board of trustees in all aspects of the organisation's financial position.
  2. Maintain the charity’s digital finance systems.
  3. Produce and present high-quality management information with accompanying commentary.
  4. Oversee the preparation of statutory accounts and work closely with external auditors.
  5. Lead and influence colleagues and stakeholders to improve knowledge and understanding of the charity’s financial position.
  6. Plan and prepare annual budget, business plans, and cash flow forecasts.
  7. Act as a key point of financial contact for the charity’s external stakeholders, funders, and suppliers.
  8. Manage the charity’s fixed asset register.
  9. Develop and implement streamlining initiatives.
  10. Approve VAT reports and returns.
  11. Oversee the collation of payroll data (for outsourcing to an external provider).

Who are we looking for?

A candidate with a background in not-for-profit or charity accounting would be high on our client’s wish list. However, it’s a desirable, not an essential requirement. This employer recognises the value in having a commercially astute, confident, and technically experienced Finance Manager at the helm, regardless of their background. The successful candidate will either hold a professional qualification (ACA/ACCA/CIMA/CIPFA) or demonstrate closely matching vocational experience. The incoming FM will require sound management/supervisory experience, excellent IT aptitude, and the ability to work with and communicate effectively with colleagues across all areas of the organisation. The role works as part of a motivated, passionate, and energetic management team whose enthusiasm for the future of the charity is infectious - a like-minded, team-playing attitude would work exceptionally well for this appointment.
