Senior Biomedical Scientist (Non Gynaecological Cytology)

Job summary

Assist in the provision of the non-gynaecological Cytology service including FNA and EBUS clinics on all BSPS sites. Supervise the NG Cytology advanced clinic support workers team based on the SPH site. Conduct primary screening and rapid review of cervical cytology cases. Perform expert review (checking) of cervical cytology cases. Undertake other duties consistent with a Band 7 Senior Biomedical Scientist position.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide expert assistance in the Non-gynaecological Cytology service including FNA and EBUS clinics across all BSPS sites.
  • Possess the qualifications, specialist knowledge, and experience to perform primary and rapid screening of cervical smears and act as an expert reviewer for abnormal cases. Attend relevant training and conferences to maintain current knowledge.
  • Meet NHSCSP accuracy standards: 90% sensitivity for all abnormal grades and 95% for high grades.
  • Perform technical procedures independently, resolving operational problems as they arise.
  • Serve as a specialist resource in all areas of Cytology (Gynae and Non-Gynae).
  • Participate in supervising the Non-Gynae preparation laboratory at St Peters Hospital.

Person Specification
  • Essential: MSc in Cellular Pathology or IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma in Cytopathology.
  • Desirable: Advanced analytical and judgemental skills across all areas of Cytology, extensive experience in routine gynae and non-gynae Cytology techniques.
