Sessional Lecture in Art & Design (Fine Art, Textiles & Fashion)

Due to growth in applications at MidKent College Medway Campus and Medway School of Arts in The Historic Dockyard, Chatham, we are looking to recruit several Art and Design lecturers to teach across a range of courses from L1 to L5 on Foundation Degree / HND Programmes. We require a diverse range of skills, to facilitate our growing number of courses from fine art, fashion design, graphics, and digital media.

We are seeking candidates from fine art, textiles, and fashion design backgrounds with the ability to design, deliver, and assess high-quality creative study programmes across our FE and HE courses at Medway School of Art and MKC Medway Campus, focusing on fine art, textiles, and fashion, including skills in pattern cutting and fashion design. You should be passionate about inspiring and motivating students through outstanding teaching and learning strategies that challenge and stretch students to excel.

Ideal candidates will be highly skilled, experienced academic practitioners with industry experience and/or postgraduate degrees in their subject areas. A passion for teaching and developing students’ employability skills within their field is essential.

Main Responsibilities and Duties:

The following is an indication of the main priorities expected for this role, as directed by the Deputy Principal, Assistant Principal, or Director, and is not exhaustive:

  1. Deliver high-quality teaching according to College standards, preparing schemes of work, lesson plans, developing curricula, and assessing student work. Maintain a positive learning environment, ensuring safeguarding, equal opportunities, and health and safety standards are met.
  2. Manage day-to-day course activities, including communication, timetable management, providing cover, and coordinating work experience and enrichment activities. Liaise with relevant departments to ensure compliance and consistency across sites.
  3. Assist with student recruitment, enrolment procedures, and induction programs to ensure proper registration and onboarding.
  4. Conduct regular meetings with students to set and review SMART targets, support UCAS applications, and address pastoral needs, collaborating with college services as needed.
  5. Monitor attendance and academic progress, report on retention and achievement, and implement action plans where necessary.
  6. Promote English and Maths provision within courses, monitoring attendance and progress.
  7. Participate in meetings, parent evenings, marketing events, and college committees, assisting with event planning and reporting.
  8. Collaborate with colleagues to develop courses, training methods, and materials, and participate in CPD and peer observation. Mentor new lecturers as required.
  9. Support departmental administration, including attendance recording, reporting, and managing the college’s VLE.
  10. Engage in quality assurance activities, including verification, moderation, and course reviews.

Lecturers on SPS points 5–8 will additionally:

  1. Undertake internal verification, moderation, and standardisation.
  2. Coordinate and monitor action plans from SAR, observations, and reviews.
  3. Assist with resource management and staffing.
  4. Support curriculum and quality issues with the Head of Department.
  5. Monitor UCAS references and liaise with Higher Education Institutions.
