Job description

Welcome to OSH

Old Swinford Hospital is one of the country’s leading state boarding schools. Many of our students are boarders from diverse backgrounds across the UK, EU, and overseas. A third of our pupils are day students who typically go home after lessons unless involved in activities like sport, music, CCF, or DofE. We are on an exciting journey to become fully co-educational by 2025, with girls having joined in Year 7 since September 2021 and the Sixth Form being mixed since 2004.

OSH is a calm, inclusive, tolerant, and welcoming environment. It is supportive and orderly, yet relaxed, as many pupils consider the school their home. Parents, pupils, and staff work together with a shared goal: to learn and prepare for contributing positively to the wider world.

Our extensive extracurricular programme fosters happiness, health, and engagement in activities such as sport, music, art, drama, and outdoor pursuits.

A major building programme has recently been completed, including an extension to the sports centre, a floodlit all-weather sports pitch, a new teaching block with a specialist arts room, a performing arts centre, and a new senior boarding house.

Sport at OSH

The Physical Education Department employs four qualified PE teachers who deliver a broad curriculum at KS3 and KS4, with options for GCSE and BTEC courses. Students in Years 7–11 have at least 3 hours of PE weekly, and in the Sixth Form, 2 hours as part of a games afternoon, with additional contact for examination courses.

The co-curricular programme is vital to school life, especially in sports, with high participation rates. The school employs specialist coaches, including a Sports Coach in residence, to support teams and coaching at all levels. OSH has achieved success at local, regional, and national levels and maintains links with elite sports clubs.

Person Specification

We welcome applications from graduates seeking school-based experience or experienced coaches looking to expand their portfolios. Preference is for candidates with expertise in Rugby Union, but we are also interested in other major sports.

  • Be conscientious and reliable.
  • Be a team player.
  • Be self-motivated.
  • Be interested in professional development.
  • Have experience in playing or coaching major sports.
