Applied Science Manager, Alexa Conversational Modeling & Learning

DESCRIPTION

As an Applied Science Manager within Alexa in the Conversational Modeling & Learning Org, you will bring business and industry context to science and technology decisions. You will set the standard for scientific excellence for your team and make decisions that affect the way we build and integrate LLMs for powering Alexa. You solicit differing views across your team and are willing to change your mind as you learn more. Your artifacts are exemplary and often used as reference across the organization.

In this role, you will innovate in the fastest-moving fields of LLMs, particularly in how to build LLMs including all phases (CPT, SFT, LHF) that work at Alexa scale.

If you are deeply familiar with LLMs, natural language processing, and machine learning and have experience managing high-performing research teams, this may be the right opportunity for you. You will work with other science and engineering teams as well as business stakeholders to maximize the velocity and impact of your team's contributions.

Key job responsibilities
You will be responsible for leading a highly performing science team, defining key research directions for the team, building a science roadmap and executing it. You will conduct science experiments by yourself to form your own intuition and help guide the team direction. You will communicate experiment results, milestones, and roadmap delivery to various stakeholders in the Org. You will be working with your team members to grow their careers and achieve their career aspirations. You will be technically solid and have a passion for building scalable science and engineering solutions.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

1. PhD
2. Knowledge of ML, NLP, Information Retrieval, and Analytics
3. Experience directly managing scientists or machine learning engineers
4. Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language
5. Experience in building machine learning models for business applications
6. Experience in applied research
7. Knowledge of machine learning approaches and algorithms

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Experience building machine learning models or developing algorithms for business applications
2. Experience building complex software systems, especially involving deep learning, machine learning, and computer vision, that have been successfully delivered to customers
3. Experience communicating with users, other technical teams, and management to collect requirements, describe software product features, and technical designs
4. Experience hiring and growing top talent
5. Strong publication record in top-tier journals and conferences
