Job Summary

This Perinatal Service Cluster 3 operates with core hours from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. The service has a referral procedure including an online referral form available via the GMMH intranet and internet site, supported by a duty system.

Referrals can be discussed initially over the phone during office hours (9am-5pm, Monday-Friday). Outside these hours, emergency referrals are made via the acute pathway, typically involving Home Treatment Teams and Mental Health Liaison Teams. Referrers include professionals involved in the care of women, such as health visitors, GPs, and midwives. The duty system ensures timely processing of all referrals, with a band 6 or above duty worker screening referrals and discussing urgent cases with clinical and operational leads.

Main Duties
  • Lead clinical role in the Perinatal CMHT, supported by operational leads.
  • Assess, formulate, and manage cases, carrying a caseload of patients with complex needs or increased risk in the perinatal period.
  • Manage treatment-resistant and complex presentations.
  • Assess and manage risks, including vulnerability, suicide, health and safety risks, and harm to others.
  • Prepare reports for Court, Mental Health Review Tribunal, and Managers' Hearings, and attend hearings.
  • Conduct assessments mainly in clinic settings but also in community settings as needed.
  • Chair pre-birth planning meetings, collaborate with community nurses and professionals, and run pre-conception counselling clinics.
  • Respond to urgent and routine advice and assessment requests, especially regarding psychotropic medication safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Run obstetric liaison clinics within maternity settings and collaborate with the Specialist Perinatal Mental Midwife on birth planning.
