Job description

We are a well established coffee shop and roastery called Tanifiki, in Portobello, Edinburgh. Currently recruiting a head barista.

What we are looking for: Passion and ambition for coffee and for a career in this industry. We want you to have some good experience, but also want to grow together, achieving new goals for yourself as well as the company. We offer SCA training and many other employment benefits.

A bit about us: We concentrate on African coffees predominantly, as both founders are from Africa. At Tanifiki we highlight the interactive, sit in experience where you get caught up in the energy, the passion and the buzz of coffee culture, highlighting some of the best of African beans as we have many ties to several countries there, and are committed to supporting the local farmers and communities that we currently deal with.

About you: Your general duties will be profiling different beans regularly, along with assisting our head roaster on cupping sessions and sample roasting. You will need to have a very social personality and be able to impart knowledge and skills to your fellow Baristas. Have a good palate for coffee sampling and the highest standards in quality control as well as an efficient, organised work area. Show good experience with pour over and batch brewing. Meeting goals and targets set out for the future will be an important part of your role.

Day to day role will include:

  1. Preparing consistently exceptional coffees, with a high level of customer engagement. We really want you to relate your passion and knowledge to any keen customer.
  2. Consistently delivering refined latte art.
  3. Oversight of all barista equipment, taking charge of all aspects to final cup quality, this includes dialling in grinders and setting espresso machine parameters.
  4. Overseeing machine cleaning and maintenance.
  5. A willingness to further the skills of the other Baristas who will not have the same skill and experience as yourself.

If this tweaks your interest and you have most of what we’re asking for, we’d love to hear from you!
