About the role
Balfour Beatty is currently recruiting for the position of Principal Civil Designer to join their Power T&D team in Scotland.
Role purpose:
To work with project teams, designers, and subcontractors through the design phase to deliver safe and suitable scope of works in line with the project objectives.
Take responsibility for the design delivery and design suitability for works across Power T&D construction projects with particular focus on Substations Civils delivery.
Provide advice as to the constructability and sequencing of civil design for Power T&D business.
Engage in bid development, tendering, and innovation projects alongside the Design Lead and Design Delivery Manager.

What you'll be doing
Key Accountabilities:
To undertake the design and coordination of civil designs required on substation projects, from initial feasibility assessment through to detail design, installation, and final removal.
Ensure the timely and quality delivery of designs by both the individual and the Substation Civil Design team. Prepare reports, calculations, and drawings to a high technical level compliant with Client and national standards (BS/Eurocodes/ENA).
Understand and capture Client requirements, including those not explicitly stated within the contract. Contribute to generating robust pricing and design delivery solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
To assess and identify design and temporary works requirements on each project, including:
• Drive a Safety by Design approach at all times.
• Lead civil project designs including reinforced concrete design and detailing, site design and enablement, land development, drainage systems, building and structure installation.
• Maintain compliance with CDM regulations and all other legal and regulatory requirements related to the team’s design outputs.
• Undertake technical quality assurance reviews and provide design approval as permitted by the Chief Engineer.
• Collaborate effectively with other design team elements on multi-disciplinary projects.
• Assist in the management of the tender process, understanding scope of works, and providing advice.
• Ensure procedures and manuals for Quality Assurance are applied.
• Mentor and guide team members.
• Support development and implementation of policies and procedures for continual team improvement.
• Act as Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE) or similar role when appropriate.
• Support engineering design delivery, focusing on upskilling and software use. Contribute to development of design aids and new concepts.
• Support colleagues in managing design output and drawings.

Who we're looking for
Skills Required:
• Degree in civil, structural, or geotechnical engineering or equivalent.
• Chartered Engineer (ICE or IStructE) preferred.
• Proven post-graduate experience in civil engineering.
• Experience supervising sub-consultants/subcontractors.
• Proven civil engineering design experience.
• Experience managing civil or geotechnical design.
• IT skills: Word, Excel, CAD.
• Extensive civil design experience for substations.
• Expertise in Tekla Tedds.
• Good knowledge of National Grid standards.
• Understanding of BIM principles (PAS1192, ISO16950).
