Position: Portering Staff

Location: James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, TS4 3BW

Employment Type: Part Time, 0.5 hours per week

Contract Duration: 6 Month Fixed Term

Key Purpose:

To provide a comprehensive, quality, efficient, and cost-effective Portering service within the hospital, ensuring patient care and customer service are prioritized.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Undertake all Back of House Portering functions professionally, competently, and safely.
  • Operate tow tractors, collect and transport goods and waste.
  • Support the provision of fluids to Wards as needed (typically daily).
  • Collect and transfer refuse, including clinical waste and special waste such as limbs and cytotoxic waste.
  • Follow company policies and procedures for effective service delivery.
  • Assist the Porter Patient Ambassador to ensure compliance with ISO regulations and quality/environmental systems.
  • Perform duties assigned by the Porter Patient Ambassador and management.
  • Achieve performance targets to agreed standards.
  • Maintain appropriate records as required.
  • Adhere to safe working practices at all times.
  • Report issues related to portering services to the Porter Team Leader.
  • Keep portering equipment clean and hygienic.
  • Report potential health and safety issues or improvements.
  • Report equipment defects or issues.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Patient Services Manager.
Requirements for the Role:
  • This is a physical role requiring mobility and manual handling skills.
  • NVQ or equivalent qualification.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Basic understanding of health and safety practices.
  • Previous experience in a hospital or service environment preferred.
  • Understanding of patient care, infection control, and safety protocols.
  • IT literacy to support innovation.
