Job description

Ackworth School, a co-educational boarding and day school, was founded in 1779 by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). It maintains its ethos and traditions, and is still governed by the Society. The school is academically non-selective and provides an excellent range of facilities and extra-curricular opportunities, recently achieving "Excellent" in the FCI/EQI (February 2023) . The Head is a member of both HMC and the Society of Heads.

We are looking to recruit a Head of Computer Science from September 2025 who can also deliver a substantial amount of teaching in other subject areas where there is timetable demand. The split in the first year will be close to 50/50. We are looking to explore the opportunity to offer A level Computer Science again. The requirement for a second subject will remain.

It is a small departmental head role so would ideally suit someone who is looking to step into their first head of department position whilst still retaining a high level of subject specialism and involvement in all lessons up to KS5. You will be part of the Maths faculty. This role reports directly into the Head of Faculty and you will be a stand alone teacher.

As a non-selective school we offer a broad education that supports all abilities. Our small class sizes mean that our teachers can dedicate more time to deliver a rich curriculum, allowing all pupils to make progress. Our pupils are one of Ackworth's USP's. Visitors to the school never fail to acknowledge how amazing they are and how positive the encounter is. This is something that makes a teaching career at Ackworth such a rewarding one.

Many of our pupils, particularly our boarders, have English as a second language. Many access EAL lessons to support their progress. Experience of EAL, and working with pupils where English is not their first language, would be an advantage.

As a boarding school we expect all of our teaching staff to embrace activities in the wider school and contribute to these areas outside of their department. An interest in taking on a non-residential boarding role will be an added advantage.

The successful candidate will:

• be an outstanding teacher with a proven track record of securing excellent outcomes

• have up-to-date knowledge of subject curricula and assessment requirements for Computer Science and use this knowledge as the subject specialist

• be able to teach Computer Science up to KS5 and other subjects up to KS3, KS4 being an advantage.

• be passionate about their own subject and also how they can promote this through pupil successes.

In return we offer:

• a competitive responsibility allowance and generous fee remission of 50% for the children of our staff.

• all food and refreshments during the working day.

• free on-site parking.

• flexible pension, health benefits and Electric car scheme.

• small class sizes

• 34 teaching weeks

• a supportive and friendly environment based on the Quaker ethos of the school.

• a committed parent community which plays an active part in the school.

• a beautiful working location in an ideal location within easy travelling distance of the main centres of Sheffield, Leeds, Doncaster and York.

Completed school application forms should be submitted with a cover letter of no more than one page and should be sent by email to: jobs@ackworthschool.comfor the attention of the Head, Martyn Beer.

Closing Date:Friday 16th May at 9.00am.

Interviews will be held the week after.

Applicants should read carefully the Recruitment, Selection and Disclosure Policy. Our recruitment privacy notice is also available on our website within “Working For Us”.

Ackworth School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and all applicants will undergo child protection screening, including checks with past employers and an enhanced DBS and Barred list check with Disclosure and Barring Service.
