About Us

The City of London Corporation’s Natural Environment Division manages some of the UK’s most cherished and historic green spaces. Within this, North London Open Spaces (NLOS) oversees Hampstead Heath, Highgate Wood, West Ham Park, and Queen’s Park - each operated as charitable trusts for the benefit of surrounding communities.

These spaces are defined by their unique landscapes, biodiversity, heritage, and recreational value. We are committed to working in partnership with local communities and stakeholders to conserve and enhance these green spaces for current and future generations.

About Hampstead Heath

Hampstead Heath is one of London’s most iconic open spaces, spanning nearly 800 acres of ancient woodland, meadows, and wetlands. A protected public open space since 1871, the Heath is a cultural and ecological treasure, featuring natural and historic landmarks including Parliament Hill, bathing ponds, a zoo, and the Grade-II listed pergola.

The Role

We are looking for a motivated and professional Operative Ranger to join our team at Hampstead Heath. As part of our Ranger Service, you will support the day-to-day management and maintenance of the site, ensuring it remains clean, safe, and welcoming for all visitors.

Your core duties will include:

  • Conducting regular patrols to ensure site security and visitor safety
  • Collecting litter and clinical waste, clearing fly-tipping, and managing site cleanliness
  • Supporting conservation and estate maintenance tasks, including vegetation control and infrastructure repairs
  • Assisting with public engagement, including educating visitors on site rules and responding to incidents
  • Supporting events, volunteering programmes, and stakeholder engagement activities
  • Operating machinery, tools, and vehicles safely and effectively
  • Maintaining accurate records of inspections, maintenance, and incidents

This role requires a hands-on approach, physical stamina, and the ability to work in all weather conditions. You will regularly engage with the public and work closely with volunteers, contractors, and other staff members.

About You

We are seeking candidates who are enthusiastic about the natural environment and committed to high standards of site care. You will bring:

  • GCSEs in English and Maths (Grade C or above)
  • NVQ in Environmental Conservation or equivalent experience
  • A full clean UK driving licence
  • First Aid certification and relevant equipment competencies (e.g., brush cutter, tractor, chainsaw)
  • Experience in grounds or conservation work, patrolling open spaces, and engaging with the public
  • Strong communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and a focus on health and safety

Why Join Us?
