Job summary

SGN is seeking a Project Engineer - Electrical & Instrumentation for Major Projects Scotland in Edinburgh. The role focuses on delivering major gas infrastructure projects from concept through commissioning, ensuring safety, programme, and budget compliance.

You will work with experienced engineers and project managers, supported by development opportunities and a strong safety culture. You will oversee project scope, cost and risk management, and coordinate interfaces across engineering

Salary: £46.1k - £69.4k per annum (Starting salary will be commensurate with relevant skills, experience and qualifications and positioned appropriately within the salary range)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Project Engineer - Electrical & Instrumentation - to join our Major Projects Team in Scotland.

Working alongside experienced engineers and project managers, you will play a key role in delivering major gas infrastructure projects, including transmission pipelines and above-ground installations. You'll be supported through ongoing development and training, providing opportunities to expand your skills and progress your career within SGN.

This role is focused on the successful delivery of major capital projects from concept through to commissioning, ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, on programme and within budget.

  • You will contribute to the delivery of major projects across the project lifecycle
  • Project delivery from concept development through to construction and commissioning.
  • Supporting feasibility studies, option assessments, conceptual design and detailed engineering design activities.
  • Managing project scope, programme, cost and risk to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Coordinating project activities and ensuring effective interfaces between engineering disciplines, contractors and stakeholders.
  • Supporting procurement, contractor management and construction delivery activities.
  • Monitoring construction and commissioning activities to ensure compliance with project requirements.
  • Ensuring compliance with SGN policies, engineering standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Promoting and embedding SGN's safety culture throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Contributing to project schedules, progress reporting and performance monitoring.
  • Preparing, reviewing and coordinating technical documentation, reports and project records.
  • Engaging effectively with internal and external stakeholders to support successful project delivery.
  • Supporting continuous improvement initiatives and the sharing of lessons learned across projects.
  • Using engineering and project management systems and software to manage project information and deliverables.
  • Supporting project teams in identifying innovative and efficient solutions to engineering challenges.
What you will need

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated engineer who can work collaboratively within a project environment while also taking ownership of individual responsibilities.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A recognised engineering qualification and experience within an engineering, construction, utilities, energy, industrial or process environment.
  • Degree, HNC or HND qualification in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience supporting or delivering engineering and construction projects.
  • Understanding of project delivery principles including scope, programme, cost and risk management.
  • Knowledge of electrical and instrumentation systems within industrial or infrastructure environments.
  • Ability to read, interpret and review technical documentation, engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound engineering decisions.
  • Good organisational skills with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Strong written skills and the ability to produce clear technical reports and project documentation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with engineering and project management software & systems.
  • Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
  • Experience working on major infrastructure, utilities, gas, energy or process industry projects.
  • Construction and/or project management experience within gas transmission or distribution networks.
  • Knowledge of construction, commissioning and project governance processes.
  • Relevant industry qualifications such as City & Guilds 2391, City & Guilds 2382 (18th Edition), COMPEX.
