The Venue

Sheffield City Hall, a stunning Art Deco venue, has been a cultural landmark since its opening in 1932. Boasting three performance spaces, including the magnificent 2,271-seat Oval Hall, this historic venue hosts diverse events—from live music and comedy to conferences and community gatherings. Sheffield City Hall is at the heart of the city's vibrant entertainment scene with a rich history of performances by artists like The Beatles, David Bowie, and contemporary stars.

About the Role

A Duty Technician is technical point of contact at the Sheffield City Hall. You would be working directly with clients and the wider SCH team to manage the smooth arrival and departure of all events, ensuring compliance with all venue health and safety policies and regulations.

The right candidate would provide physical support within the venue, preparing areas for the arrival of all events. You would set up, operate, and pack down rigging, sound, lighting, and AV equipment. Complete room set ups as required, including but not limited to seating, staging and furniture.

As a Duty Technician you would be responsible for operating in house equipment (rota dependant) and will support the Technical Manager with planned preventative maintenance, organisation, and procurement of any equipment to facilitate continued development and improvement of the technology within the Hall.

You would also be responsible for the general housekeeping and maintenance of SCH equipment. Ensuring any equipment not in use is stored away in its correct location and that faulty equipment is identified and either safely removed from use or repaired.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Event Support & Coordination: Assist with preparing venues to meet production specifications, including advancing events and liaising with the Technical Manager and Event Coordinators on technical requirements

  • Operation & Supervision: Operate sound, lighting, and AV equipment during events; supervise technicians and casual staff; perform equipment repairs, modifications, and adjustments as needed.
  • Setup, Installation & Rigging: Take part in technical production, including installation and operation of equipment, room setups (staging, seating, AV, lighting), and support for load-ins/outs; advise on rigging loads and policy, ensuring safety and compliance with house limits.
  • Maintenance & Facilities Management: Provide electrically biased support, ensure safety compliance, assist with general building maintenance, and monitor the Building Management System (BMS) to maintain environmental conditions.
  • Teamwork, Training & Compliance: Collaborate effectively with colleagues, stay updated on technologies and regulations through ongoing training, and perform other duties as required by the Technical Manager.

We are looking for someone with:

  • Certifications & Technical Skills: Hold IPAF certification with working knowledge of Artifax Event Management software and experience using CAD or similar applications.
  • Communication & Teamwork: Communicate professionally with colleagues and visitors at all levels and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills in a team environment.
  • Physical Capability & Safety Awareness: Physically fit for manual handling tasks and committed to following health and safety legislation and safe systems of work.
  • Adaptability & Learning: Show a willingness to learn and quickly pick up new skills in a fast-paced, dynamic setting.
  • Performance Under Pressure: Capable of working effectively under pressure and meeting strict deadlines.
